Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrival in Port Sudan & Suakin

Arrive at Port Sudan International Airport (Port Sudan, the main port city of Sudan, on the Red Sea coast). Transfer to your hotel. Explore Port Sudan: visit the Port Sudan Souq (a bustling market with its fresh seafood, spices, fruits, and local products), the Port Sudan Museum, the Corniche (the waterfront promenade), and the port area (with its ships, dhows, and fishing boats). Visit the nearby English Beach and the Coral Beach for a swim and relaxation. After lunch, take a day trip to Suakin (approximately 1 hour from Port Sudan), one of the most historic and fascinating cities on the Red Sea coast. Suakin was once the most important port on the Red Sea, a major trading center for spices, slaves, gold, and ivory, and the main port of the Ottoman Empire in the Red Sea. The city is built on a small island in a lagoon, and is famous for its unique coral architecture (the buildings are made from coral rock, with their distinctive white color, beautiful arched windows, and intricate wooden shutters (roshans), a unique architectural style found only in Suakin and a few other places on the Red Sea). Visit the historic island of Suakin, exploring the narrow streets, the beautiful coral buildings (many of which are now in ruins, but still stunning), the Ottoman-era mosques, the old customs house, the old port, and the various historic sites. Visit the Suakin Museum (housed in a beautiful restored coral building, with its exhibits on the history of Suakin and the Red Sea trade). Visit the nearby mainland town of Suakin and the new port. Take a boat ride around the island, enjoying the beautiful views of the coral city from the water. Visit the nearby beaches for swimming and snorkeling (the waters around Suakin are teeming with marine life, with beautiful coral reefs just offshore). Evening return to Port Sudan. Dinner with fresh Red Sea seafood (the Red Sea is famous for its delicious fish, shrimp, lobster, and other seafood). Overnight in Port Sudan.

Day 2: Sanganeb Atoll Diving & Snorkeling

Full day boat trip to Sanganeb Atoll (approximately 1.5-2 hours by boat from Port Sudan), one of the most beautiful and pristine coral atolls in the Red Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (part of the Sanganeb National Park), located about 25 kilometers offshore from Port Sudan. Sanganeb Atoll is a small, isolated atoll rising from the deep blue waters of the Red Sea, with its stunning coral reefs, crystal-clear waters, and abundant marine life. The atoll is famous for its incredible diving and snorkeling, with its pristine coral reefs (some of the most pristine in the Red Sea, as they have been protected from overfishing and pollution), its dramatic wall dives (the reef drops off dramatically into the deep blue, with the wall covered in vibrant soft corals, gorgonians, and sea fans), and its abundant marine life including large schools of fish (snappers, groupers, jacks, barracudas, anthias, butterflyfish, angelfish, and many more), reef sharks (grey reef sharks, blacktip reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, and occasionally hammerhead sharks), rays (manta rays, eagle rays, stingrays, and occasionally whale sharks), sea turtles (green turtles and hawksbill turtles), dolphins, and many other species. The atoll also has a beautiful lighthouse (built by the British in 1906, still in operation, with its beautiful white tower and red top, offering stunning views from the top). Spend the day diving or snorkeling at the various sites around the atoll, including the famous Sanganeb Reef (the main reef on the eastern side of the atoll, with its dramatic wall and abundant marine life), the North Point, the South Point, and the various other sites. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the boat or on the beautiful sandbar at the atoll. Continue diving or snorkeling in the afternoon, exploring different sites around the atoll. Watch the beautiful sunset over the Red Sea from the boat. Evening return to Port Sudan. Dinner with fresh seafood. Overnight in Port Sudan.

Day 3: Dungonab Bay & Mukkawar Island & Departure

Morning take a boat trip to Dungonab Bay and Mukkawar Island (approximately 1.5-2 hours by boat north of Port Sudan), another beautiful and pristine area of the Sudanese Red Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (part of the Dungonab Bay – Mukkawar Island National Park). Dungonab Bay is a large, sheltered bay with its beautiful coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangrove forests, and abundant marine life. The bay is famous for its population of dugongs (sea cows, a rare and endangered marine mammal, Dungonab Bay is one of the best places in the world to see dugongs), as well as sea turtles, dolphins, rays, and many species of fish. Visit Mukkawar Island (a beautiful island at the entrance to Dungonab Bay, with its pristine beaches, coral reefs, and the ruins of an old Ottoman-era fort and a lighthouse). The waters around Mukkawar Island are teeming with marine life, with beautiful coral reefs and abundant fish. Spend the morning snorkeling or diving in Dungonab Bay and around Mukkawar Island, looking for dugongs, sea turtles, dolphins, rays, and the abundant fish and coral. Visit the mangrove forests in the bay (mangroves are important coastal ecosystems that provide habitat for many species of fish, birds, and other wildlife). Visit the beautiful beaches of Mukkawar Island for swimming and relaxation. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach or on the boat. After lunch, take a final snorkel or dive, or relax on the beach and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Visit the nearby Riyah Islands (a group of small islands with beautiful beaches and coral reefs) if time permits. Afternoon return to Port Sudan. Do some last-minute shopping for Red Sea products including fresh seafood, spices, and local crafts. Transfer to Port Sudan International Airport for your departure flight. Concluding your 3-day Port Sudan Red Sea history and diving escape.
