Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Fort-de-France

Welcome to Martinique! Transfer to your hotel. Evening rhum agricole tasting at a local bar to understand the difference between rhum agricole (from fresh sugarcane juice) and industrial rum (from molasses). Overnight in Fort-de-France.

Day 2: Fort-de-France Markets & Culture

Morning exploration of the Grand Marché Couvert — the covered market where vendors sell everything from dasheen root to hand-woven madras cloth. Visit the Aimé Césaire Museum, dedicated to the poet-politician who co-founded the Négritude movement. Afternoon: Creole cooking class — learn to prepare accras (cod fritters), colombo (curry), and flan coco (coconut flan). Overnight in Fort-de-France.

Day 3: Saint-Pierre & Mount Pelée

Drive the Route de la Trace to Saint-Pierre, the “Pompeii of the Caribbean.” Walk among the ruins of the theater and prison. Optional: hike the northern trail up Mount Pelée (1,397m), still an active volcano. The 4-5 hour climb rewards with sweeping views from Dominica to St. Lucia on clear days. Overnight in Saint-Pierre.

Day 4: Northern Rum Trail

Visit three historic distilleries: Depaz (nestled at the foot of Mount Pelée), Neisson (the smallest, family-owned since 1931), and JM (with its stunning mahogany aging cellars). Each produces rhum agricole with distinct terroir-driven flavors. Lunch at a plantation house restaurant. Afternoon: visit the Anse Couleuvre black sand beach on the wild northern coast. Overnight in Saint-Pierre.

Day 5: Southern Coast & Diamond Rock

Drive south along the Caribbean coast to Anse d’Arlet. Snorkel among sea turtles at this protected bay. Continue to Diamond Rock, where you can kayak around the famous islet. Beach time at Les Salines. Farewell dinner at a beachfront restaurant in Trois-Îlets. Overnight in Trois-Îlets.

Day 6: Depart Martinique

Transfer to airport.
