Discover the hidden treasures of Sudan on this 5-day short break, from the vibrant capital of Khartoum to the stunning pyramids of Meroe (more pyramids than Egypt!), the ancient Nubian sites of Naqa and Musawwarat es-Sufra, and the sacred mountain of Jebel Barkal. Sudan, the largest country in Africa, is home to more ancient pyramids than Egypt, a rich Nubian heritage, and stunning landscapes along the Nile.

Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrival in Khartoum & Omdurman

Arrive at Khartoum International Airport. Transfer to your hotel. Explore Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, located at the confluence of the Blue Nile and White Nile rivers (the exact point where the two Niles meet is called Al-Mogran, and you can see the two different colored waters merging). Visit the National Museum of Sudan (the largest museum in Sudan, with its world-class collection of Nubian artifacts including the beautiful temples of Buhen and Semna (relocated from Lake Nasser), the statues of the Nubian kings, the ancient pottery, and the famous granite statue of the Meroitic king), the Republican Palace Museum (housed in the former Anglican cathedral, with its exhibits on Sudanese history and the presidential palace), the Khalifa House Museum (the former home of the Khalifa Abdallahi ibn Muhammad, the successor of the Mahdi, with its exhibits on the Mahdist period), and the Al-Mogran (the confluence of the two Niles, with its beautiful views and the Al-Mogran Family Park). Visit the Sudan Ethnographic Museum (with its exhibits on the diverse cultures and ethnic groups of Sudan). Walk along the Nile Corniche and enjoy the beautiful views of the river. After lunch, visit Omdurman (the largest city in Sudan, located across the White Nile from Khartoum, the historic capital of the Mahdist State). Visit the Al-Mahdi’s Tomb (the tomb of Muhammad Ahmad, the self-proclaimed Mahdi, who led a successful revolt against the Egyptian-British rule in Sudan in the 1880s, a beautiful domed tomb that is an important religious site), the Khalifa’s House (the former residence of the Khalifa Abdallahi, now a museum), the Omdurman Souq (one of the largest markets in Africa, a bustling market with its narrow alleys, colorful stalls, and everything from spices and food to clothing and crafts, a great place to experience the vibrant Sudanese culture), and the Hamed el-Nil Mosque (a famous Sufi mosque, where you can witness the Sufi whirling dervish ceremony on Friday afternoons, a mesmerizing and spiritual experience with the dervishes in their colorful robes spinning and chanting). Evening welcome dinner with Sudanese cuisine including ful medames (fava beans, the national dish), kisra (a thin sourdough flatbread), asida (a porridge made from sorghum or millet), mullah (a rich stew), and fresh Nile fish. Overnight in Khartoum.

Day 2: Meroe Pyramids

Morning drive from Khartoum to Meroe (approximately 2.5-3 hours), the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Kush (the Nubian kingdom that ruled Sudan from 800 BC to 350 AD), located on the east bank of the Nile, in the heart of the Nubian desert. Meroe is home to the largest number of pyramids in the world (over 200 pyramids, more than in all of Egypt!), the pyramids of the Nubian kings and queens, built between 300 BC and 300 AD. The Meroe pyramids are smaller and steeper than the Egyptian pyramids, with their distinctive narrow bases and steep sides, and many have beautiful chapels with detailed relief carvings depicting the kings and queens, the gods, and the offering scenes. Explore the Meroe pyramids: visit the Northern Cemetery (the largest and most impressive, with the pyramids of the kings and queens, including the famous pyramid of Queen Amanishakheto, with its beautiful relief carvings), the Southern Cemetery (with the pyramids of the earlier kings and the commoners), and the Western Cemetery (with the pyramids of the later period). Visit the Meroe Royal City (the ruins of the ancient city of Meroe, with its palaces, temples, and the famous Temple of Amun, with its large enclosure and the remains of the columns). Visit the Meroe Museum (a small museum with artifacts found at the site). Enjoy the stunning scenery of the pyramids rising from the desert sands, with the beautiful backdrop of the Nile and the surrounding mountains. After lunch, visit the nearby Royal City of Meroe and the Temple of Apedemak (the lion god of the Nubians). Visit the nearby village and experience the local Nubian culture. Evening stay at a desert camp or a guesthouse near Meroe, enjoying the beautiful desert sunset and the starry night sky (the Meroe area is famous for its incredible stargazing, with minimal light pollution). Dinner with local cuisine. Overnight near Meroe (or return to Khartoum if preferred).

Day 3: Naqa & Musawwarat es-Sufra

Morning visit Naqa (approximately 1-1.5 hours from Meroe), an ancient Nubian city located in the desert, about 50 kilometers east of the Nile, one of the most important archaeological sites in Sudan, with its beautifully preserved temples. Naqa was a major religious center of the Kingdom of Kush, and its temples are some of the best-preserved Nubian temples in the world. Visit the Temple of Apedemak (the Lion Temple, dedicated to the Nubian lion god Apedemak, one of the most beautiful temples in Sudan, with its stunning relief carvings depicting the kings and queens making offerings to the gods, and the famous depiction of the three-headed, four-armed lion god Apedemak, a unique and impressive sculpture), the Temple of Amun (a large temple dedicated to the god Amun, with its hypostyle hall, courtyard, and the famous Roman kiosk (a beautiful small Roman-style pavilion, with its columns and arches, a unique blend of Nubian and Roman architecture), and the various other temples and shrines. The temples at Naqa are remarkably well-preserved, with many of the original relief carvings and colors still visible, making it one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Africa. After exploring Naqa, visit Musawwarat es-Sufra (approximately 30 minutes from Naqa), another ancient Nubian site, located in the desert, famous for its Great Enclosure (a massive complex of walls, courtyards, ramps, and passages, covering over 45,000 square meters, one of the largest ancient structures in Africa, its purpose is still debated by archaeologists, with theories ranging from a training ground for elephants to a pilgrimage center or a royal palace complex). Visit the Great Enclosure, the Temple of Apedemak (another beautiful lion temple, similar to the one at Naqa), and the various other structures. The site is also famous for its numerous elephant carvings and depictions, suggesting that elephants played an important role in the Nubian culture at Musawwarat. After lunch, drive back to Khartoum (approximately 3-4 hours), enjoying the beautiful desert scenery along the way. Evening arrive in Khartoum. Dinner with local cuisine. Overnight in Khartoum.

Day 4: Khartoum to Karima & Jebel Barkal

Morning fly or drive from Khartoum to Karima (approximately 1 hour flight or 4-5 hours drive), a town in northern Sudan, located on the Nile, near the ancient Nubian sites of Napata (the first capital of the Kingdom of Kush). Visit Jebel Barkal (a beautiful 104-meter-tall flat-topped mountain, rising dramatically from the desert, the most sacred site of the Nubian kingdom, believed to be the home of the god Amun, and the site where the Nubian kings were crowned). Jebel Barkal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its summit offers stunning panoramic views of the Nile, the surrounding desert, and the nearby pyramids. At the base of Jebel Barkal, visit the Temple of Amun (the Great Temple of Amun, built by the Nubian kings, with its beautiful hypostyle hall, courtyards, and the famous B500 chapel with its beautiful relief carvings), the Temple of Mut (dedicated to the goddess Mut, the wife of Amun), and the various other temples and shrines. Visit the Royal Cemetery of Napata (the pyramids of the early Nubian kings, including the pyramids of King Piye, King Taharqa, and King Tanwetamani, who ruled over both Nubia and Egypt as the 25th Dynasty (the Nubian Dynasty of Egypt)). Visit the nearby town of Karima and the local Nubian villages, experiencing the traditional Nubian culture. After lunch, visit the nearby sites of Kerma (the capital of the Kerma culture, the earliest Nubian civilization, dating back to 2500 BC, with its massive deffufa (a large mud-brick structure, one of the oldest man-made structures in Africa), the Western Deffufa, the Eastern Deffufa, and the ancient cemetery), and the nearby site of Sai Island (an island in the Nile, with its ancient Egyptian and Nubian ruins, including an Egyptian temple and an Ottoman fort). Evening stay in Karima or the surrounding area. Enjoy the beautiful sunset over the Nile and the desert. Dinner with local Nubian cuisine. Overnight in Karima area.

Day 5: Karima to Khartoum & Departure

Morning take a final walk around the Jebel Barkal area, enjoying the last views of the sacred mountain, the Nile, and the pyramids. Visit the local market in Karima for last-minute shopping for Nubian crafts, spices, and local products. After breakfast, fly or drive back to Khartoum (approximately 1 hour flight or 4-5 hours drive). Upon arrival in Khartoum, do some last-minute shopping for Sudanese products including Nubian handicrafts, spices, traditional clothing, and local products. Visit the Khartoum Souq or the craft markets for souvenirs. Visit the Al-Mogran (the confluence of the two Niles) for a final view of this unique natural phenomenon. After lunch, transfer to Khartoum International Airport for your departure flight. Concluding your 5-day Khartoum and the Nile pyramids and Nubian culture short break.
