Day 1: Arrive Sanya — China’s Hawaii

Arrive at Sanya Phoenix International Airport. Hainan Island, China’s southernmost province, sits at the same latitude as Hawaii — and its climate matches. Transfer to your beachfront resort on Sanya Bay. Afternoon: settle into tropical island mode. Walk the 22km Sanya Bay beach — white sand, coconut palms, and surprisingly clear water. Evening: seafood feast at a beachside restaurant — Hainan is famous for its fresh catch, especially the local specialty Hele crab and Wenchang chicken (poached chicken with ginger-scallion oil, one of China’s four great chicken dishes). Overnight in Sanya.

Day 2: Nanshan Temple & Tianya Haijiao

Morning at Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone, home to the 108-meter-tall Guanyin of the South Sea — a three-faced statue of the Bodhisattva of Compassion that dwarfs the Statue of Liberty. The statue stands on an artificial island connected by a bridge, gazing serenely at the South China Sea. Visit the Nanshan Temple complex with its Tang Dynasty-inspired architecture. Afternoon: Tianya Haijiao (Edge of the Sky, Rim of the Sea), a rocky shoreline where exiled officials of ancient China believed they had reached the end of the civilized world. Today, the dramatic granite boulders inscribed with calligraphy are a popular spot for photos — despite the original meaning being rather dark. Overnight in Sanya.

Day 3: Yanoda Rainforest & Wuzhizhou Island

Morning: Yanoda Rainforest Cultural Tourism Zone, a pristine tropical rainforest reserve. Walk raised boardwalks through the jungle canopy, cross a suspension bridge over a valley, and descend alongside waterfalls. The biodiversity here is staggering — Hainan is home to over 4,200 plant species, including the Hainan black-crested gibbon (one of the world’s rarest primates, only 30 remain). Afternoon: ferry to Wuzhizhou Island, a coral island 30km offshore with some of China’s best snorkeling and diving. The island’s white-sand beaches and turquoise water genuinely look like the Maldives. Snorkel among butterflyfish and parrotfish in the coral gardens. Overnight in Sanya.

Day 4: Li & Miao Ethnic Villages + Hot Springs

Morning visit to a Li and Miao minority cultural village in the forests north of Sanya. The Li people are Hainan’s original inhabitants, with a history on the island dating back 3,000 years. Watch Li women demonstrate their traditional brocade weaving — the intricate cotton textiles are considered living fossils of textile history and influenced the development of China’s earliest weaving techniques. Afternoon: visit the Nantian Hot Springs, where dozens of pools are fed by natural geothermal water ranging from warm to 57°C — try the fish therapy pool where tiny garra rufa fish nibble dead skin from your feet. Overnight in Sanya.

Day 5: Sanya & Depart

Morning free at the beach. Optional: visit the Sanya duty-free shopping complex (Hainan is a duty-free island). Transfer to airport.
