Day 1: Arrival in San Salvador & Suchitoto

Arrive at Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport (San Salvador, El Salvador). Transfer to your hotel. Explore San Salvador, the capital and largest city of El Salvador, a vibrant city nestled in a valley surrounded by volcanoes, with its modern buildings, colonial architecture, bustling markets, and vibrant culture. Visit the Historic Center of San Salvador: the Catedral Metropolitana (the Metropolitan Cathedral, the main cathedral of San Salvador, the burial place of Archbishop Óscar Romero, a beautiful modern cathedral), the Plaza Libertad (the main square, with its beautiful fountain and the historic buildings surrounding it), the Palacio Nacional (the National Palace, a beautiful neoclassical building with its colorful interiors and the famous Pink Room, Red Room, Blue Room, and Yellow Room), the Teatro Nacional (the National Theater, a beautiful neoclassical theater, one of the oldest in Central America), the Iglesia El Rosario (a beautiful modern church with its unique curved roof and beautiful stained glass), and the various colonial and modern buildings. Visit the Museo Nacional de Antropología (the National Museum of Anthropology, with its excellent collection of artifacts from the pre-Columbian cultures of El Salvador, including the Maya, Lenca, Pipil, and other groups, with beautiful pottery, jade, stone carvings, and other artifacts), the Museo de Arte de El Salvador (the Art Museum of El Salvador, with its collection of Salvadoran and international art), and the various other museums. Visit the bustling Mercado Central (the Central Market, a large market with its fresh produce, food, clothing, crafts, and household goods, a great place to experience the vibrant Salvadoran culture). Visit the Monumento al Divino Salvador del Mundo (the iconic monument of San Salvador, depicting Jesus Christ on a globe of the world, the symbol of the city), and the Plaza Las Américas. After lunch, drive to Suchitoto (approximately 1.5 hours), one of the most beautiful and best-preserved colonial towns in El Salvador, located on the shores of Lake Suchitlán, with its cobblestone streets, whitewashed colonial buildings, beautiful churches, and stunning views of the lake and the surrounding volcanoes. Suchitoto is a cultural center of El Salvador, famous for its art, music, theater, and the famous Suchitoto International Film Festival. Explore Suchitoto: visit the Parque Central (the main square, with its beautiful fountain, the church, and the surrounding colonial buildings), the Iglesia Santa Lucía (the main church, a beautiful colonial church with its stunning views of the lake), the Casa de la Cultura (the House of Culture, housed in a beautiful colonial building, with its art exhibits and cultural events), the various art galleries, craft shops, and cafes, and the beautiful cobblestone streets and colonial architecture of the town. Walk along the shores of Lake Suchitlán (a beautiful man-made lake, with its calm waters, beautiful islands, and stunning views of the surrounding volcanoes), and take a boat ride on the lake, enjoying the beautiful scenery and the birdlife (the lake is home to many species of birds including herons, egrets, storks, ibises, and kingfishers). Visit the nearby village of San Francisco Javier and the surrounding countryside, enjoying the beautiful scenery. Evening welcome dinner with Salvadoran cuisine including pupusas (the national dish of El Salvador, thick corn tortillas filled with cheese, beans, chicharrón (pork), or other fillings, served with curtido (pickled cabbage) and tomato sauce), tamales, yuca frita (fried cassava), and fresh tropical fruits. Overnight in Suchitoto.

Day 2: Joya de Cerén, San Andrés & Santa Ana

Morning visit Joya de Cerén (a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an ancient Maya village that was preserved under volcanic ash after a volcanic eruption around 600 AD, often called the Pompeii of the Americas, because the volcanic ash preserved the village and its contents in remarkable detail, including the thatched roofs, the food stored in the houses, the tools, and the everyday objects, giving us a unique window into the daily life of the ancient Maya people). Explore the ruins: visit the various excavated structures including the houses, the kitchens, the sweat baths (temazcales), the storage buildings, the ceremonial structures, and the agricultural fields, with the preserved artifacts and the reconstructed thatched roofs. Visit the site museum, with its exhibits on the history of the site, the volcanic eruption, and the daily life of the ancient Maya people. After Joya de Cerén, visit the nearby ruins of San Andrés (another important archaeological site in El Salvador, the ancient capital of the Maya kingdom of the Zapotitán Valley, with its beautiful pyramids, plazas, temples, and the famous San Andrés Pyramid (the largest pyramid in El Salvador, with its beautiful views of the surrounding valley). Explore the ruins: visit the Great Plaza, the various pyramids and temples, the acropolis, the ball court, and the various other structures. Day 3: Coatepeque Lake & Ruta de Las Flores

Morning visit Lake Coatepeque (Lago de Coatepeque), one of the most beautiful crater lakes in the world, a stunning turquoise-blue lake located in a volcanic crater, surrounded by lush green hills and the beautiful Santa Ana Volcano in the background. The lake is famous for its stunning turquoise-blue water (which changes color depending on the time of day and the weather), its calm waters, and its beautiful setting. Take a boat ride on the lake, enjoying the beautiful scenery and the stunning views of the volcano and the surrounding hills. Visit the various spots around the lake, including the beautiful beaches, the hot springs (there are hot springs on the shores of the lake, where you can soak in the warm mineral water), and the various restaurants and cafes with their beautiful views of the lake. Visit the nearby town of El Congo and the surrounding countryside. After Lake Coatepeque, drive to the Ruta de Las Flores (the Flower Route), a beautiful scenic route through the western highlands of El Salvador, passing through a series of beautiful colorful towns, each with its own unique character, art, culture, and cuisine. Day 4: Ruta de Las Flores & to San Salvador

Morning continue exploring the Ruta de Las Flores, visiting any towns or spots you may have missed. Visit the town of Salcoatitán (a beautiful town famous for its coffee and its beautiful church), the town of Nahulingo (a beautiful town with its vibrant market and its textile tradition), and the various other beautiful towns along the route. Visit the nearby coffee plantations for a final coffee tasting, or visit the nearby nature reserves and waterfalls for a hike and a swim. After lunch, drive back to San Salvador (approximately 1.5-2 hours), enjoying the beautiful scenery along the way. Upon arrival in San Salvador, visit the nearby town of Panchimalco (a beautiful indigenous town just outside San Salvador, famous for its indigenous culture, its beautiful church, and its traditional dances and crafts, including the famous Las Flores dance (the Flower Dance, performed by the indigenous women of Panchimalco, wearing beautiful flower headdresses). Visit the town and meet the local people, learning about their culture and traditions. Visit the nearby Los Planes de Renderos (a beautiful area overlooking San Salvador, with its stunning views of the city and the surrounding volcanoes, and its famous pupuserías (restaurants serving pupusas, the national dish of El Salvador). Day 5: San Salvador & Departure

Morning free for last-minute exploration of San Salvador or shopping for Salvadoran products including coffee, textiles, crafts, art, and local products. Visit the San Salvador markets or the craft shops for souvenirs. Visit the National Museum of Anthropology for a final look at the artifacts, or relax at a café overlooking the city. Visit the nearby volcanoes (such as the San Salvador Volcano or the Santa Ana Volcano) for a hike and beautiful views, if time permits.
