Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrival in Roseau & Trafalgar Falls
Arrive at Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM) or Canefield Airport (DCF). Transfer to your hotel in Roseau, the capital and largest city of Dominica, a vibrant Caribbean city nestled between the Caribbean Sea and lush rainforest-covered mountains, with its colorful colonial architecture, bustling markets, and the beautiful Roseau River. Explore Roseau: visit the Roseau Market (a bustling market with fresh tropical fruits, vegetables, spices, crafts, and local food), the Old Market Plaza, the Roseau Cathedral, Fort Young Hotel, the Dominica Museum, and the various colonial buildings. Walk along the Roseau waterfront. After lunch, visit the Trafalgar Falls (a stunning pair of waterfalls – the Father Falls and Mother Falls – in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, with beautiful natural pools at the base and natural hot springs nearby). Hike to the viewing platform for views of both falls, then hike to the base of the Mother Falls for a swim. Visit the natural hot springs. Visit the nearby Titou Gorge (a dramatic narrow gorge with crystal-clear turquoise water, surrounded by towering cliffs, with a waterfall at the end; made famous by Pirates of the Caribbean). Swim through the gorge to the waterfall. Evening welcome dinner with Dominican cuisine including mountain chicken (the national dish), callaloo soup, fresh seafood, and rum punch. Overnight in Roseau.
Day 2: Boiling Lake Hike
Early morning start for the Boiling Lake hike (one of the most challenging and rewarding hikes in the Caribbean, a full-day hike of approximately 6-8 hours round trip, covering about 13 km, with elevation gain of about 900 m. The Boiling Lake is the second-largest boiling lake in the world, a flooded fumarole with water constantly boiling due to volcanic heat, with water temperature reaching up to 92°C near the edges. The lake is approximately 60 m across, located in the heart of Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The trail takes you through lush rainforest, past beautiful waterfalls, over streams, through the dramatic Valley of Desolation (a surreal volcanic landscape with bubbling hot springs, fumaroles, and volcanic deposits, with the smell of sulfur in the air), and finally to the Boiling Lake itself. Along the way, see tropical plants, trees, flowers, and wildlife including the rare imperial parrot (the national bird of Dominica, an endangered species found only in Dominica), the red-necked parrot, hummingbirds, lizards, frogs, and butterflies. Pack a lunch and plenty of water, wear sturdy hiking shoes and rain gear. After the hike, return to Roseau for a well-deserved rest. Evening dinner with local cuisine. Overnight in Roseau.
Day 3: Middleham Falls, Champagne Reef & Scotts Head
Morning visit Middleham Falls (one of the tallest and most beautiful waterfalls in Dominica, a stunning 70-meter waterfall in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, surrounded by lush rainforest, with a beautiful natural pool at the base). Hike to the falls (approximately 45 minutes each way) through beautiful rainforest, then go for a refreshing swim in the natural pool. Visit the nearby Laudat village. After lunch, visit the Champagne Reef (one of the most unique snorkeling spots in the Caribbean, a beautiful coral reef near Soufrière where volcanic gases bubble up through the sand and water, creating a champagne-like effect. The reef is teeming with marine life including tropical fish, coral, sea turtles, rays, and the unique experience of snorkeling among bubbles). Snorkel at the Champagne Reef. Visit the nearby town of Soufrière and Soufrière Bay. Visit Scotts Head (a beautiful village at the southern tip of Dominica, on a small peninsula with views of both the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean). Visit the Scotts Head Fort (a historic British fort with panoramic views of both seas). Hike to the top for stunning views. Visit the beautiful beaches of Scotts Head. Visit the Soufrière-Scott’s Head Marine Reserve. Evening return to Roseau. Farewell dinner with Dominican cuisine and fresh seafood. Overnight in Roseau.
Day 4: Kalinago Territory & Departure
Morning visit the Kalinago Territory (a 3,700-acre territory on the east coast, home to the Kalinago people (formerly known as the Caribs), the indigenous people of Dominica and the Eastern Caribbean. The Kalinago Territory was established in 1903 and is home to approximately 3,000 Kalinago people who maintain their traditional culture, language, crafts, and way of life). Visit the Kalinago Barana Autê (the Kalinago Cultural Village, a traditional village showcasing Kalinago culture with thatched-roof huts, craft demonstrations including basket weaving, pottery, and canoe building, traditional dances and music, and traditional food). Take a guided tour, learn about Kalinago culture and history, watch craft demonstrations, and enjoy a traditional Kalinago meal. Visit craft shops and buy handmade crafts including baskets, pottery, jewelry, and carvings. Visit the beautiful beaches of the Kalinago Territory including Batibou Beach (a beautiful black sand beach with dramatic scenery and powerful waves). Visit the nearby town of Marigot. After lunch, transfer to Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM) or Canefield Airport (DCF) for your departure flight. Concluding your 4-day Dominica Boiling Lake express adventure tour.
