Day 1: Arrival in Paro & Paro Valley

Arrive at Paro International Airport (Paro, Bhutan, one of the most scenic airport approaches in the world, with stunning views of the Himalayas). Transfer to your hotel. Explore Paro, a beautiful valley in western Bhutan, with its stunning dzong (fortress-monastery), its beautiful rice fields, its traditional Bhutanese architecture, and its stunning mountain scenery. Visit the Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong, a stunning fortress-monastery built in 1646, one of the most beautiful dzongs in Bhutan, with its stunning architecture, its beautiful courtyards, and its fascinating history). Visit the National Museum of Bhutan (housed in a historic watchtower above the Paro Dzong, with its excellent collection of Bhutanese art, artifacts, and exhibits on the history and culture of Bhutan). Visit the nearby Kyichu Lhakhang (one of the oldest and most sacred temples in Bhutan, built in the 7th century by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, with its beautiful architecture and its sacred Buddha statues). Day 2: Tiger’s Nest Monastery & Paro Tshechu Festival

Morning hike to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang Palphug Monastery, one of the most sacred and iconic sites in Bhutan, a stunning monastery perched on a cliff 3,120 meters above sea level, overlooking the Paro Valley. The monastery was built in the 8th century at the site where the famous Buddhist master Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) is said to have flown to on the back of a tigress, and it is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Bhutan). The hike takes approximately 2-3 hours each way, through beautiful pine forests and with stunning views of the monastery and the valley. Visit the monastery, explore the various temples and shrines, and enjoy the stunning views. After the hike, attend the Paro Tshechu (if held during your visit, a vibrant religious festival held annually in the Paro Dzong, with colorful mask dances performed by monks in elaborate costumes and masks, depicting various Buddhist deities and stories, as well as folk dances, music, and celebrations. The Tshechu is one of the most important and colorful festivals in Bhutan, and it is a wonderful opportunity to experience the unique Bhutanese culture and spirituality). Day 3: Paro to Thimphu & Capital City Tour

Morning drive from Paro to Thimphu (approximately 1 hour), the capital and largest city of Bhutan, a unique capital city with no traffic lights, its beautiful traditional Bhutanese architecture, its stunning setting in the Thimphu Valley, and its vibrant culture. Explore Thimphu: visit the Tashichho Dzong (a stunning fortress-monastery, the seat of the Bhutanese government and the summer residence of the Je Khenpo (the Chief Abbot of Bhutan), with its stunning architecture, its beautiful courtyards, and its golden spires). Morning drive from Thimphu to Punakha (approximately 2-3 hours), over the Dochula Pass (at an altitude of 3,140 meters, with stunning panoramic views of the Himalayan mountain range including the majestic Gangkhar Puensum (7,570 meters, the highest unclimbed mountain in the world) and the beautiful 108 chortens (stupas) built on the pass). Visit the Dochula Pass and enjoy the stunning mountain views (weather permitting). Full day exploring the Bumthang Valley, the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, with its many ancient temples and monasteries. Visit the Jambay Lhakhang (one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, built in the 7th century by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, with its beautiful architecture and its sacred Buddha statues. The Jambay Lhakhang is famous for its annual festival (Jambay Lhakhang Drup), held in October/November, with its colorful mask dances and the famous naked dance (tercham), a unique and ancient ritual). Visit the Kurjey Lhakhang (a beautiful temple complex built around a cave where Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) meditated in the 8th century, with his body imprint visible on the cave wall.
