Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Belize City — Welcome to the Jewel

Touch down at Philip Goldson International Airport, where your National Geographic CEO (Chief Experience Officer) greets you. Transfer to your jungle lodge in Burrell Boom, nestled along the Belize River. Welcome briefing and orientation — the calls of howler monkeys echo through the canopy. Enjoy a welcome dinner featuring Belizean favorites: rice and beans, stewed chicken, and fresh ceviche. Overnight at Black Orchid Resort.

Day 2: Lamanai Maya Ruins & New River Safari

Morning boat safari up the New River — watch for crocodiles, jabiru storks, and spider monkeys along the banks. Arrive at Lamanai (“Submerged Crocodile” in Maya), one of Belize’s largest Maya ceremonial centers, continuously occupied for 3,000 years. Climb the High Temple — 33 meters above the jungle canopy — for views stretching to the horizon. Explore the Mask Temple with its 13-foot carved limestone mask of a Maya ruler, and the Jaguar Temple. Howler monkeys provide the soundtrack. Afternoon return to Burrell Boom. Evening: traditional Creole cooking demonstration. Overnight at Black Orchid Resort. (B, L)

Day 3: Community Baboon Sanctuary & Belize City → San Ignacio

Visit the Community Baboon Sanctuary — a grassroots conservation project where 200+ landowners voluntarily protect black howler monkey habitat across 20 square miles. Walk with local guides to observe troops of “baboons” (as Belizeans call howler monkeys) swinging through the canopy. Learn about this pioneering community-based conservation model. Afternoon drive west through the Maya Mountains to San Ignacio, the eco-adventure capital of Belize. Check into your riverside lodge. Evening free to explore Cahal Pech Maya ruins at sunset — a small but atmospheric hilltop site overlooking the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena. Overnight in San Ignacio. (B)

Day 4: Xunantunich Maya Ruins & San Antonio Women’s Cooperative

Cross the Mopan River by hand-cranked ferry to reach Xunantunich (“Stone Woman”), one of Belize’s most impressive Maya sites. The centerpiece is El Castillo — a 40-meter pyramid adorned with elaborate stucco friezes depicting Maya gods and astronomical symbols. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the Mopan River valley and, on clear days, the Guatemalan Petén. Afternoon: visit the San Antonio Women’s Cooperative, where Maya women preserve traditional pottery and slate-carving techniques. Try your hand at the potter’s wheel and hear their stories of cultural preservation and economic empowerment. Overnight in San Ignacio. (B, L)

Day 5: Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave — The Maya Underworld

The day you’ll never forget. Drive deep into the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, then hike 45 minutes through jungle, crossing three rivers to reach the entrance of Actun Tunichil Muknal — the “Cave of the Stone Sepulchre.” Swim into the dark mouth of the cave, then wade and climb through crystalline chambers for nearly a kilometer underground. This is one of the world’s most extraordinary Maya archaeological sites — a sacrificial cave where you’ll see calcified human remains (including the famous “Crystal Maiden” — a skeleton whose bones have been covered in sparkling calcite crystals), ceremonial pottery exactly where it was left 1,200 years ago, and the eerie silence of a place considered the entrance to Xibalba — the Maya underworld. No cameras allowed inside (to protect the site). Return to San Ignacio for a well-deserved Belikin beer. Overnight in San Ignacio. (B, L)

Day 6: Barton Creek Cave & Mountain Pine Ridge

Canoe into Barton Creek Cave — a massive river cave system used by the Maya for ceremonial purposes. Paddle past towering stalactites, cathedral-like chambers, and Maya pottery remains on high ledges. Afternoon: visit the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve — a surprising landscape of granite boulders, pine forest, and tumbling waterfalls. Swim in the cool pools of Rio On Pools or stand at the edge of Big Rock Falls. Visit the Green Hills Butterfly Ranch to see Belize’s spectacular blue morpho butterflies. Farewell dinner in San Ignacio at a farm-to-table restaurant. Overnight in San Ignacio. (B)

Day 7: San Ignacio → Caye Caulker — Caribbean Paradise

Morning transfer back to Belize City, then board a water taxi for the 45-minute crossing to Caye Caulker — the laid-back island where the motto is “Go Slow.” The moment you step off the boat, everything changes: golf carts replace cars, sandy streets replace pavement, and the Caribbean turquoise stretches to the horizon. Check into your beachfront hotel. Afternoon: orientation walk — The Split (the famous swimming hole created by Hurricane Hattie in 1961), the Lazy Lizard bar, and the island’s colorful wooden houses. Sunset at The Split with a rum punch in hand. Overnight on Caye Caulker. (B)

Day 8: Hol Chan Marine Reserve & Shark Ray Alley Snorkeling

Full-day snorkeling expedition to Hol Chan Marine Reserve — Belize’s oldest marine protected area. The name means “Little Channel” in Maya, referring to the cut in the reef. Snorkel alongside sea turtles, spotted eagle rays, and massive schools of tropical fish through coral gardens teeming with life. Then the highlight: Shark Ray Alley, where southern stingrays and nurse sharks glide right up to you in waist-deep water. These gentle creatures have been visiting this spot for generations — an unforgettable close encounter. Afternoon: free to kayak, cycle around the island, or simply sway in a hammock. Farewell dinner of grilled lobster (in season) at a beachfront restaurant. Overnight on Caye Caulker. (B, L)

Day 9: Departure

Final morning in paradise — one last swim, one last coconut water. Water taxi back to Belize City for your onward flight. You leave with memories of Maya temples rising from the jungle, the Caribbean reef alive with color, and the warmth of Belizean hospitality.
