Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrival in San Salvador & Suchitoto

Arrive at Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport (San Salvador). Transfer to Suchitoto (approximately 1.5 hours), one of the most beautiful and best-preserved colonial towns in El Salvador, located on the shores of Lake Suchitlán, with its cobblestone streets, whitewashed colonial buildings, beautiful churches, and stunning views of the lake and surrounding volcanoes. Suchitoto is a cultural center of El Salvador, famous for its art, music, theater, and the Suchitoto International Film Festival. Explore Suchitoto: visit the Parque Central, Iglesia Santa Lucía (a beautiful colonial church with stunning lake views), Casa de la Cultura, art galleries, craft shops, and cafes. Walk along the shores of Lake Suchitlán and take a boat ride, enjoying the scenery and birdlife. Evening welcome dinner with Salvadoran cuisine including pupusas (the national dish), tamales, yuca frita, and fresh tropical fruits. Overnight in Suchitoto.

Day 2: Joya de Cerén, San Andrés & Santa Ana

Morning visit Joya de Cerén (UNESCO World Heritage Site), an ancient Maya village preserved under volcanic ash after an eruption around 600 AD, often called the Pompeii of the Americas, with remarkably preserved thatched roofs, food stores, tools, and everyday objects. Explore the excavated houses, kitchens, sweat baths, storage buildings, and agricultural fields. Visit the site museum. Afterward, visit the nearby ruins of San Andrés, the ancient capital of the Maya kingdom of the Zapotitán Valley, with its beautiful pyramids, plazas, temples, and the largest pyramid in El Salvador. After lunch, drive to Santa Ana (approximately 1.5 hours), the second-largest city in El Salvador, in the western highlands near the Guatemalan border. Explore the Historic Center: Catedral de Santa Ana (a beautiful neo-Gothic cathedral), Parque Central, Palacio Municipal, Teatro de Santa Ana, and the bustling Mercado de Santa Ana. Visit the nearby town of Chalchuapa and the ruins of Tazumal, one of the most important archaeological sites in El Salvador, with its beautiful pyramids, plazas, temples, and the famous tomb of the Maya priest with rich offerings of jade and pottery. Evening return to Santa Ana. Dinner with local cuisine. Overnight in Santa Ana.

Day 3: Coatepeque Lake & Ruta de Las Flores

Morning visit Lake Coatepeque, one of the most beautiful crater lakes in the world, a stunning turquoise-blue lake in a volcanic crater surrounded by lush green hills and the Santa Ana Volcano. Take a boat ride on the lake, enjoying the scenery and views of the volcano. Visit the hot springs on the shores. Afterward, drive to the Ruta de Las Flores (Flower Route), a beautiful scenic route through the western highlands passing through colorful towns. Visit Juayúa, famous for its weekend food festival with dozens of food stalls selling local and international cuisine, beautiful murals, and the nearby Los Chorros de la Calera waterfalls. Visit Ataco (Concepción de Ataco), a colorful town famous for its vibrant murals depicting Salvadoran life, its textile weaving tradition, craft shops, and mountain setting. Visit Apaneca, at 1,400 meters altitude, famous for its views of surrounding volcanoes, coffee plantations, and the Santa Leticia nature reserve. Visit coffee plantations for tours and tastings (El Salvador is famous for its high-quality coffee grown in volcanic soil). Visit the various waterfalls along the route. Evening stay in Ataco or Juayúa. Dinner with local cuisine and the weekend food festival if applicable. Overnight on the Ruta de Las Flores.

Day 4: Ruta de Las Flores & to Pacific Coast

Morning continue exploring the Ruta de Las Flores, visiting any towns or spots missed. Visit Salcoatitán, famous for its coffee and beautiful church. Visit Nahulingo, with its vibrant market and textile tradition. Visit nearby coffee plantations for a final coffee tasting, or visit nature reserves and waterfalls for a hike and swim. After lunch, drive to the Pacific Coast (approximately 1.5-2 hours), to the beautiful beach town of El Tunco (La Libertad department), one of the most popular beach destinations in El Salvador, famous for its black sand beach, excellent surf breaks, vibrant surf culture, beachfront restaurants, bars, and hostels, and stunning sunsets. Upon arrival, check into your beachfront hotel or hostel. Explore El Tunco: walk along the beach, watch the surfers, enjoy the beachfront restaurants and bars, and watch the stunning sunset over the Pacific Ocean. Visit the nearby towns of La Libertad, El Sunzal, and El Zonte, all beautiful beach towns with excellent surf breaks and vibrant surf culture. Evening enjoy a beachfront dinner with fresh seafood and local cuisine, watching the sunset. Overnight in El Tunco.

Day 5: Pacific Coast Beaches & Surfing

Full day enjoying the beautiful Pacific beaches of El Salvador. Try surfing at one of the excellent surf breaks in the area (El Tunco, El Sunzal, El Zonte, or La Libertad), with surf lessons available for beginners, or just enjoy the waves if you’re an experienced surfer. Relax on the black sand beaches, swim in the Pacific Ocean, or try other water sports including stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, or bodyboarding. Take a boat trip along the coast, enjoying the beautiful scenery and looking for marine life including dolphins, sea turtles, and whales (in season). Visit the nearby Walter Thilo Deininger National Park, a beautiful coastal park with its beaches, mangrove forests, and diverse wildlife. Visit the nearby town of La Libertad and its famous fish market, where you can see the fishermen bringing in their catch and buy fresh seafood. Visit the nearby El Zonte beach, a beautiful beach town famous for its Bitcoin economy and vibrant surf culture. After lunch, continue enjoying the beach and the surf. Visit the nearby Tunco River mouth and the surrounding area. Evening enjoy a final beachfront dinner with fresh seafood, watching the stunning sunset over the Pacific. Overnight in El Tunco.

Day 6: Pacific Coast to San Salvador & Departure

Morning take a final walk on the beach or a final surf session. Do some last-minute shopping for Salvadoran products including coffee, textiles, crafts, art, and local products. Visit the local craft shops or markets for souvenirs. After breakfast, drive back to San Salvador (approximately 45 minutes-1 hour). Upon arrival, depending on your flight schedule, visit the National Museum of Anthropology for a final look at the artifacts, or relax at a café. Visit the nearby town of Panchimalco, a beautiful indigenous town just outside San Salvador famous for its indigenous culture, beautiful church, and traditional dances including the famous Las Flores (Flower Dance) performed by women wearing flower headdresses. Visit the town and meet the local people. Visit Los Planes de Renderos for stunning views of San Salvador and the surrounding volcanoes, and enjoy pupusas at a famous pupusería. Transfer to Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport for your departure flight. Concluding your 6-day El Salvador nature and culture immersion tour.
