Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Luanda for Carnival
Arrive during Angola’s Carnival season (February) — Luanda transforms into one of Africa’s greatest street parties. Afternoon: orientation walk along the Marginal. Evening: welcome dinner with live semba music (the predecessor to Brazilian samba). Overnight in Luanda.
Day 2: Carnival Parade Day
Full day at the Carnival parade — Angola’s Carnival rivals Rio’s in energy and spectacle. Watch samba schools compete with elaborate costumes, floats, and choreographed performances on the Marginal. Taste street food: mufete (grilled fish with beans and plantains), calulu, and ginguba. Join the dancing — Angolans are famously welcoming to visitors during Carnival. Overnight in Luanda.
Day 3: Luanda Cultural Deep Dive
Post-Carnival exploration: visit the National Anthropology Museum with its extraordinary collection of masks and artifacts from Angola’s diverse ethnic groups. Visit artists’ studios in Luanda’s creative neighborhoods. Afternoon: kizomba dance class — learn the sensuous partner dance that Angola gave to the world. Evening at a live music venue in the Sambizanga district. Overnight in Luanda.
Day 4: Ship Cemetery & Mussulo
Morning: visit the ship cemetery on Mussulo Island’s far end — dozens of rusting vessels beached and abandoned after the civil war, now a haunting photo destination. Afternoon: beach and seafood lunch on Mussulo. Overnight in Luanda.
Day 5: Urban Art & Contemporary Angola
Morning: Luanda’s exploding street art scene — massive murals by Angolan artists transforming the city. Visit the Triennial of Luanda art exhibition if in season. Afternoon: visit the Cidade Alta (Upper City) historic district. Evening: farewell dinner at a rooftop restaurant with views of Luanda Bay. Overnight in Luanda.
Day 6: Depart Luanda
Morning market visit for souvenirs. Transfer to airport.
