Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrival in Leh
Arrive at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (Leh), one of the highest commercial airports in the world at 3,256 meters. Transfer to your hotel. Rest and acclimatize to the high altitude (important to take it easy on the first day). Afternoon short walk around Leh town: visit the Leh Palace (a 17th-century royal palace, now a museum), the Main Bazaar, and the local markets. Evening welcome dinner with Tibetan and Ladakhi cuisine. Overnight in Leh.
Day 2: Leh – Thiksey, Hemis & Shey Monasteries
Morning visit Thiksey Monastery, one of the largest and most beautiful monasteries in Ladakh, a 12-story complex perched on a hill, with its stunning 15-meter-high Maitreya Buddha statue (the largest in Ladakh) and beautiful murals. Attend the morning prayer ceremony with the monks. After lunch, visit Hemis Monastery, the largest and wealthiest monastery in Ladakh, famous for its annual Hemis Festival (mask dance festival) and its beautiful thangkas (religious paintings). Visit the Hemis National Park (home to snow leopards). Visit Shey Palace and Monastery, the former summer capital of Ladakh, with its giant copper-gilded Buddha statue. Evening return to Leh. Overnight in Leh.
Day 3: Leh – Alchi & Likir Monasteries
Morning drive along the Indus River to Alchi Monastery, one of the oldest and most important monasteries in Ladakh, founded in the 11th century, famous for its unique Kashmiri-style murals and paintings (some of the oldest and best-preserved in the Himalayas). The monastery complex includes the Dukhang (assembly hall), the Sumtsek (three-story temple), and the Manjushri Temple. After lunch, visit Likir Monastery, a beautiful 11th-century monastery perched on a hill, with its massive 23-meter-high Maitreya Buddha statue (gold-covered) and beautiful views of the Indus Valley. Visit the nearby village of Basgo with its ancient fortress and monastery. Evening return to Leh. Overnight in Leh.
Day 4: Leh to Nubra Valley (via Khardung La)
Morning drive to Nubra Valley via Khardung La Pass (5,359 meters), one of the highest motorable passes in the world. The drive offers stunning views of the Himalayan peaks and glaciers. Upon arrival in Nubra Valley (the Valley of Flowers), visit Diskit Monastery, the oldest and largest monastery in Nubra, with its 32-meter-high Maitreya Buddha statue overlooking the valley. After lunch, visit Hunder Village with its spectacular sand dunes (the only high-altitude desert in the world) and double-humped Bactrian camels. Take a camel ride through the dunes. Enjoy the stunning scenery of the Nubra Valley with its snow-capped peaks, green oases, and desert dunes. Overnight in Nubra Valley (Hunder or Diskit).
Day 5: Nubra Valley – Turtuk & Panamik
Morning drive to Turtuk, the northernmost village in India, located near the Pakistan border, inhabited by the Balti people with their unique culture and language. Explore the village, visit the Turtuk Monastery, and learn about the Balti culture. After lunch, visit Panamik, a village famous for its hot springs (with therapeutic properties) and its beautiful location at the foot of the Siachen Glacier. Visit the Ensa Monastery, a small but beautiful monastery with ancient murals. Enjoy the stunning scenery of the upper Nubra Valley. Overnight in Nubra Valley.
Day 6: Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake
Morning drive from Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake (Pangong Tso), via the Shyok Valley and the Chang La Pass (5,360 meters). Pangong Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, a 134-kilometer-long brackish lake at an altitude of 4,250 meters, with its stunning turquoise-blue waters that change color throughout the day. The lake is famous for its appearance in the Bollywood movie ‘3 Idiots’. Enjoy the stunning views of the lake with the snow-capped Himalayan peaks reflected in the water. Watch the sunset over the lake. Overnight at Pangong Lake (in a camp or guesthouse).
Day 7: Pangong Lake to Leh
Early morning watch the sunrise over Pangong Lake, with the colors of the water changing from deep blue to turquoise to gold. After breakfast, drive back to Leh via the Chang La Pass, enjoying the stunning Himalayan scenery along the way. Afternoon arrive in Leh. Visit the Leh Market for last-minute shopping for Tibetan handicrafts, pashmina shawls, jewelry, and Buddhist artifacts. Evening enjoy a farewell dinner with traditional Ladakhi and Tibetan cuisine, including momos (dumplings), thukpa (noodle soup), and butter tea. Overnight in Leh.
Day 8: Departure from Leh
Morning free for last-minute exploration of Leh or shopping. Transfer to Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport for your onward flight to Delhi or other destinations, concluding your scintillating 8-day Ladakh tour.
