7-Day Hiking & Trekking Ecuadorian Andes

📅 3 Days / 2 Nights 💵 From $0 👥 Max 15 People 4.9/5

📋 Overview

Day 1: Quito Arrival & Pasochoa Acclimatization Hike

Arrive at Quito airport and transfer to your hotel. After a brief rest, head south to the Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge, a collapsed volcanic crater now covered in pristine cloud forest and paramo. At 3,100 meters, this moderate 3-4 hour hike is the perfect acclimatization introduction. The trail winds through dense vegetation where hummingbirds zip between bromeliads, Andean guans call from the canopy, and if you are exceptionally lucky, you may spot a spectacled bear. The crater’s amphitheater shape creates a natural shelter that has preserved one of the last remnants of the original Andean forest that once covered the entire valley. Return to Quito for your first night in the Andes. Overnight in Quito.

Day 2: Cotopaxi National Park – Trek to Jose Ribas Refuge (4,864m)

An early departure takes you south into Cotopaxi National Park. At the park entrance, you will already feel the altitude as the vehicle climbs toward the parking lot at 4,500 meters. The air is thin, the landscape stark and lunar. Begin the trek on foot across the volcanic plain toward Limpiopungo Lagoon, where the reflection of Cotopaxi’s perfect cone doubles the beauty. Wild horses graze on the paramo grasslands while carunculated caracaras patrol overhead. The main challenge: ascend on foot from 4,500m to the Jose Ribas Refuge at 4,864 meters. The gradient is steady, the path well-defined, but the altitude demands slow, measured steps. At the refuge, celebrate with hot coca tea while clouds swirl around the glacier just above you. The descent is quicker, and you will return to a cozy hacienda near Cotopaxi for a restorative evening. Overnight near Cotopaxi.

Day 3: Isinlivi Highland Trail – Indigenous Hamlets & Mountain Vistas

Today you journey into the heart of Ecuador’s indigenous highlands along the Quilotoa Loop. Drive to the trailhead near the village of Isinlivi, perched on a ridge at 2,900 meters. The 12-kilometer trek follows ancient footpaths connecting scattered indigenous hamlets, crossing patchwork fields of quinoa, potatoes, and broad beans. Along the way, greet Quechua-speaking farmers in their colorful ponchos and felt hats, tending crops using methods unchanged for centuries. The trail undulates across ridges offering views over the Toachi River Canyon and distant snow-capped peaks. Stop for a packed lunch at a viewpoint before continuing to your lodge in Chugchilan, a village clinging to the canyon rim. As the sun sets, the canyon walls glow gold and pink – the famous Andean light that has inspired artists for generations. Overnight in Chugchilan.

Day 4: Quilotoa Crater Rim Trek – Emerald Lake Circuit

Rise early for the highlight of the Quilotoa Loop. Drive to the crater rim at 3,914 meters and gaze down into the emerald-green lake filling the 3-kilometer-wide caldera. Today you have two options: Option A – descend the sandy trail to the crater floor, touch the mineral-rich green water, and optionally kayak before the steep 45-60 minute ascent back up. Option B – tackle the full 10-kilometer crater rim circuit, which takes approximately 5 hours and delivers ever-changing perspectives of the lake as the sun moves across the sky. The rim trek is physically demanding but the views are incomparable: to the west, the jagged peaks of the western cordillera; to the east, successive ridges falling away toward the Amazon basin. After the hike, enjoy a well-deserved lunch at a local restaurant overlooking the crater. In the afternoon, drive to a hacienda near the Ilinizas Ecological Reserve. Overnight near Ilinizas.

Day 5: Ilinizas Ecological Reserve – Twin Peak Highlands

After breakfast, enter the Ilinizas Ecological Reserve, a protected area dominated by the twin peaks of Iliniza Norte (5,126m) and Iliniza Sur (5,248m). The reserve’s paramo ecosystem is a botanist’s dream: chuquiragua bushes with orange flowers said to be the favorite food of the Andean condor, frailejones with their fuzzy silver leaves, and delicate gentians blooming at ground level. Today’s hike follows a highland trail between the two peaks, reaching approximately 4,400 meters. The terrain alternates between grassy slopes and rocky moraines left by retreating glaciers. On clear days, the panorama extends to Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, and the sprawling Quito valley. The reserve is also home to Andean foxes, deer, and occasionally a soaring condor. After 5-6 hours of trekking, return to the hacienda for a warm meal and rest. Overnight near Ilinizas.

Day 6: Chimborazo Base Camp Challenge – Beyond 5,000m

The ultimate challenge of the tour. Depart early for Chimborazo Volcano, Ecuador’s highest peak at 6,263 meters. Drive through the arid Chimborazo Fauna Production Reserve, keeping watch for elegant vicunas – wild South American camelids with the finest wool in the world. At the first refuge (4,800m), begin the trek to the Whymper Refuge at 5,000 meters. The path climbs steadily across volcanic scree and patches of permanent ice. At this extreme altitude, every step requires conscious effort and deep, measured breathing. When you reach the refuge – higher than any mountain in the contiguous Americas north of here – the sense of achievement is overwhelming. To the west, the Pacific coastal plain shimmers in the distance; to the east, the Amazon basin spreads like a green ocean. Chimborazo’s summit, due to the Earth’s equatorial bulge, is the closest point to the sun on the planet’s surface. After savoring this moment, descend and celebrate with a hearty lunch. In the afternoon, transfer back to Quito. Farewell dinner at one of the city’s finest restaurants. Overnight in Quito.

Day 7: Quito Departure

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at your hotel. Depending on your flight time, explore Quito at leisure – perhaps visit the Guayasamin Museum, ride the Teleferico cable car up Pichincha Volcano for a final high-altitude panorama, or wander through the Parque La Carolina botanical gardens. Transfer to Mariscal Sucre International Airport, departing with sore legs, full memory cards, and a deep connection to the high Andes you have conquered on foot.
