5-Day Pantanal Wildlife Experience: Birding, River Safaris & Nocturnal Adventures

Day 1: Arrive & First Encounters

Transfer from Campo Grande to Pantanal lodge. Afternoon: introductory wildlife walk — capybaras grazing, caimans sunning, jabiru storks overhead. Welcome dinner and briefing. Overnight lodge.

Day 2: Rio Claro Boat Safari

Full day on the Rio Claro, one of the Pantanal’s clearest rivers. The boat navigates quietly through channels where visibility is exceptional — giant river otters hunting cooperatively (watch them corral fish as a family unit), caimans on the banks, kingfishers and egrets, and if you’re very lucky, a jaguar drinking at the water’s edge. Picnic lunch on a sandbank. Afternoon: visit to a traditional Pantanal cattle ranch to understand the cowboy culture that has coexisted with this ecosystem for centuries. Night safari after dinner. Overnight lodge.

Day 3: Transpantaneira Wildlife Drive

Full-day exploration of the Transpantaneira Highway — 147km of wildlife at arm’s reach. Every bridge yields new encounters: capybaras in family groups of 20+, caimans by the score, and if you’re observant, the emerald flash of a hyacinth macaw (endangered, down to ~6,500 individuals worldwide, and the Pantanal is their last stronghold). Picnic lunch. Afternoon walk through gallery forest for monkeys, toucans, and the possibility of a tapir. Return to lodge. Overnight lodge.

Day 4: Dawn Photographic Safari & Free Exploration

Pre-dawn departure for a photographic safari — the golden hour light over the wetlands, mist rising from the water, and wildlife at their most active. Your guide will position you for the best shots. Midday rest. Afternoon: choose between another horseback ride, canoe trip, or piranha fishing. Final night safari — the Pantanal at night is a completely different world. Overnight lodge.

Day 5: Final Dawn & Return

Final dawn walk — one last immersion in the Pantanal’s morning symphony. Breakfast, then transfer back to Campo Grande.
