Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrival in Monrovia & City Tour

Arrive at Roberts International Airport. Transfer to your hotel in Monrovia. Explore Monrovia: visit the Liberian National Museum, Providence Island (where freed African-American settlers first arrived in 1822), the Centennial Pavilion, the Executive Mansion, the Capitol Building, and the Temple of Justice. Visit the Waterside Market, Red Light Market, and Duala Market. Visit the historic Providence Baptist Church and the Masonic Temple. Evening welcome dinner with Liberian cuisine including jollof rice, fufu with soup, fried plantains, and pepper soup. Overnight in Monrovia.

Day 2: Kpelle Country & Traditional Culture

Morning drive to Kpelle Country (Bong County), homeland of the Kpelle people, the largest ethnic group in Liberia. Visit a traditional Kpelle village, meet the chief and elders, and learn about Kpelle culture, the Poro and Sande secret societies, and traditional governance. Watch a traditional mask dance performance with beautifully carved wooden masks, colorful costumes, and energetic dancing to drums and xylophones. Visit Kpelle craft workshops: pottery, weaving, blacksmithing, woodcarving. After lunch, visit Gbarnga town and the nearby rubber plantations (Liberia is a major rubber producer). Evening return to Monrovia. Traditional dinner with drumming and dancing. Overnight in Monrovia.

Day 3: Bassa Country & Buchanan

Morning drive to Bassa Country (Grand Bassa County), homeland of the Bassa people. Visit the port city of Buchanan, the second-largest city in Liberia. Visit the Buchanan port, Bassa beaches, and historic buildings. Visit a traditional Bassa village, meet the local people, and learn about Bassa culture including storytelling, proverbs, and the famous Bassa bamboo orchestra (unique musical tradition using bamboo instruments). Watch a Bassa cultural performance with traditional dances, music, and storytelling. Visit Bassa craft workshops: textile weaving, pottery. After lunch, visit Mount Coffee Hydroelectric Plant and White Plains Beach. Return to Monrovia. Overnight in Monrovia.

Day 4: Monrovia to Robertsport

Morning drive to Robertsport (approximately 2.5 hours from Monrovia), a historic coastal town in Grand Cape Mount County, located on a peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Piso (the largest lake in Liberia). Robertsport was founded in 1856 and named after Joseph Jenkins Roberts, the first president of Liberia. The town is known for its beautiful beaches, historic architecture, and excellent surfing (some of the best surf breaks in West Africa). Explore Robertsport: visit the historic downtown with its 19th-century architecture, the Robertsport lighthouse, the old trading posts, and the beautiful beaches. Visit the nearby Vai and Gola villages, meet the local people, and learn about their traditional culture including the Vai script (one of the few indigenous writing systems in Africa, invented by the Vai people in the 19th century). After lunch, enjoy the beach: swimming, surfing, or relaxing on the pristine sand. Visit Lake Piso for a boat ride, birdwatching, and fishing. Evening enjoy fresh seafood dinner on the beach. Overnight in Robertsport (in a beach lodge or guesthouse).

Day 5: Robertsport Beach & Departure

Morning watch the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean from the beautiful Robertsport beach. Take a refreshing swim, try surfing (with instruction if desired), or take a walk along the pristine beach. Visit the nearby fishing village, watch the fishermen bring in their catch, and see the traditional fishing methods. Visit the Lake Piso area for more birdwatching and nature. After breakfast, do some last-minute shopping for Liberian crafts, textiles, and traditional products in Robertsport. Drive back to Monrovia (approximately 2.5 hours). Afternoon free for last-minute shopping in Monrovia at the Waterside Market or the craft markets.
