Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrival in Banjul & Serrekunda
Arrive at Banjul International Airport. Transfer to your hotel in the Kololi/Serekunda area (the main tourist hub). Explore the area: visit the Senegambia Strip (the main tourist area with restaurants, bars, and shops), the Kololi Beach, and the local markets. Evening welcome dinner with Gambian cuisine including domoda (peanut stew), benachin (one-pot rice dish), and yassa (marinated chicken or fish with onions and lemon). Overnight in Kololi/Serrekunda.
Day 2: Serrekunda Markets & Banjul
Morning visit the bustling markets of Serrekunda: the Serrekunda Market (one of the largest in The Gambia, with textiles, clothing, food, spices, and crafts), the Albert Market in Banjul (the historic main market, with colorful stalls selling everything from fabric to fruit to traditional medicines), and the Craft Market (where you can buy hand-carved wooden masks, drums, batik fabrics, and jewelry). Visit the Banjul State House, the Arch 22 (a monumental arch commemorating the 1994 coup, with a museum and panoramic views from the top), and the National Museum of The Gambia. After lunch, take a ferry across the Gambia River to Barra (if time permits). Visit the Tanji Fishing Village (a colorful and bustling fishing village where you can see fishermen bringing in their catch, women smoking fish, and the vibrant fish market). Evening enjoy a traditional drumming and dancing performance. Overnight in Kololi/Serrekunda.
Day 3: Makasutu Sacred Forest & Brikama
Morning visit Makasutu Culture Forest, a 500-hectare sacred forest and cultural center, where you can experience the traditional culture and spirituality of the Mandinka people. Take a guided walk through the forest with a local guide, learning about the sacred trees, medicinal plants, traditional beliefs, and the history of the area. Visit the Makasutu Cultural Village, where you can see traditional Mandinka architecture, watch traditional dances, and learn about the local culture. Take a boat ride through the mangroves and look for wildlife including monkeys, crocodiles, and a variety of birds. After lunch, visit Brikama, the largest town in the West Coast Region, known for its woodcarving industry. Visit the Brikama Craft Market, where you can watch woodcarvers at work creating masks, drums, and sculptures. Visit the Brikama Museum. Evening return to Kololi. Overnight in Kololi/Serrekunda.
Day 4: Janjanbureh (Georgetown) & Kiang West
Morning drive to Janjanbureh (formerly Georgetown), a historic town on Janjanbureh Island in the Gambia River, approximately 2.5 hours from Kololi. Janjanbureh was a major center of the slave trade and later a British colonial administrative center. Visit the Janjanbureh Slave Museum (documenting the history of the slave trade in The Gambia), the old colonial buildings, the Governor’s Residence, and the historic cemetery. Visit the Wassu Stone Circles (a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the largest concentrations of ancient stone circles in the world, dating back to 1000 BC, believed to be burial sites). After lunch, visit the Kiang West National Park (a beautiful protected area with diverse wildlife including baboons, monkeys, antelopes, crocodiles, and over 200 species of birds). Take a boat ride on the Gambia River to see hippos, crocodiles, and birds. Evening return to Kololi or overnight in Janjanbureh. Overnight in Kololi/Janjanbureh.
Day 5: Beach Day & Departure
Morning free for a beach day: relax on the beautiful Atlantic beaches of The Gambia (Kololi Beach, Kotu Beach, or Fajara Beach), take a refreshing swim in the ocean, or enjoy a horseback ride along the beach. Optional: visit the Abuko Nature Reserve (the first wildlife reserve in The Gambia, with monkeys, antelopes, crocodiles, and over 200 species of birds) or the Lamin Lodge (a beautiful restaurant and bar on stilts in the mangroves, great for birdwatching and fresh seafood). After lunch, do some last-minute shopping for Gambian crafts, batik fabrics, and traditional products. Transfer to Banjul International Airport for your departure flight, concluding your 5-day essence of Gambia tour.
