📅 3 Days / 2 Nights 💵 From $0 👥 Max 15 People 4.9/5

📋 Overview

Day 1: Quito City Tour & Teleferico Cable Car

Arrive at Quito airport and transfer to your hotel. After a brief rest, embark on a guided tour of Quito’s historic center, the first city declared a UNESCO World Heritage site alongside Krakow in 1978. Stroll Independence Plaza flanked by the Presidential Palace and the Cathedral. Step inside La Compania de Jesus, where seven tons of gold leaf adorn the baroque interior in arguably the most ornate church in the Americas. Visit San Francisco Square, the heart of colonial Quito, before riding the Teleferico cable car up the slopes of Pichincha Volcano. In just 18 minutes, you ascend from 3,117 meters to Cruz Loma at 4,100 meters. On clear days, the 360-degree panorama reveals Cotopaxi, Cayambe, Antisana, and the entire Quito valley sprawling beneath you. The ride also helps kick-start your altitude acclimatization. Evening at leisure in Quito’s La Mariscal district. Overnight in Quito.

Day 2: Cotopaxi National Park – Full Day Adventure

An early departure south along the Pan-American Highway, entering the Avenue of the Volcanoes with snow-capped peaks flanking both sides of the valley. At Cotopaxi National Park, stop at the Interpretation Center to learn about the volcano’s violent history – its last major eruption in 1877 sent lahars racing all the way to the Pacific. Drive up to the parking area at 4,500 meters, where the vegetation has given way to volcanic sand and rock. Hike across the paramo to Limpiopungo Lagoon, scanning for Andean gulls and carunculated caracaras along the shore. Wild horses graze peacefully in sight of the volcano they have learned to live beside. The main event: trek on foot to the Jose Ribas Refuge at 4,864 meters. The path is steep but steady, and reaching the refuge – standing at the snow line, glacier above you, the green valley below – is a triumphant moment. After descending, enjoy a packed lunch with Cotopaxi as your backdrop. Return to a highland hacienda for a warm evening meal. Overnight near Cotopaxi.

Day 3: Quilotoa Crater Lake – Emerald Adventure

Depart south through the serrated ridges of the Quilotoa Loop, a region of dramatic canyons and indigenous Kichwa communities where time moves at a slower pace. Arrive at the rim of Quilotoa at 3,914 meters. The first sight of the crater lake – a near-perfect circle of emerald water 3 kilometers across and 250 meters deep – is genuinely jaw-dropping. The lake’s color shifts from jade to turquoise to deep green as clouds pass overhead. Begin the descent on foot down a sandy trail to the crater floor. At the bottom, you can touch the mineral-rich water, watch kayakers glide across the surface, or simply sit and absorb the silence of this geological marvel. The ascent back to the rim takes 45-60 minutes, though mules are available for those who prefer (optional, small fee). After a well-earned lunch at a local restaurant overlooking the crater, explore the artisan village of Tigua, famous for colorful sheepskin paintings depicting Andean life. Overnight near Quilotoa or in Latacunga.

Day 4: Banos – Swing, Waterfalls & Thermal Baths

Journey down the dramatic Pastaza River gorge into the subtropics, arriving at Banos de Agua Santa. The town buzzes with energy – mountain bikers, zip-liners, and travelers from around the world have made Banos Ecuador’s adventure capital. First stop: the Casa del Arbol treehouse, home to the world-famous Swing at the End of the World. This unassuming wooden swing launches you over a sheer drop with Tungurahua Volcano towering behind – undoubtedly one of the most photographed spots in South America. Continue to Pailon del Diablo, Ecuador’s most powerful waterfall. Descend the stone staircases and suspension bridges that bring you face-to-face with the thundering cascade. The raw power of the water and the mist on your skin is exhilarating. In the afternoon, you have free time: soak in Banos’s volcanic thermal baths, try zip-lining across the Pastaza canyon, sample the handmade melcocha taffy being stretched on door hooks throughout town, or rent a bike to explore the waterfall route at your own pace. Overnight in Banos.

Day 5: Return to Quito via the Valley of the Volcanoes

After a leisurely breakfast, begin the journey north back to Quito. The route takes you through the fertile Valley of the Volcanoes, where on clear days you can see a succession of seven snow-capped peaks – Tungurahua, Chimborazo, Carihuairazo, Iliniza Norte, Iliniza Sur, Cotopaxi, and Ruminahui – lining the horizon like silent sentinels. Stop for photos at viewpoints along the way, including the Lagoon of Yambo, a peaceful high-altitude lake often covered with lily pads. Arrive in Quito by early afternoon. Depending on your flight time, you may have free time for last-minute exploration or to shop for Ecuadorian chocolate, coffee, and crafts at Quito’s artisan markets. Transfer to Mariscal Sucre International Airport for your departure flight, taking with you five days of condensed Ecuadorian magic.
