4-Day Pantanal Discovery: Fazenda Safari, Piranha Fishing & Horseback Riding
📋 Overview
Day 1: Campo Grande to the Pantanal
Morning pickup from Campo Grande. Drive 3-4 hours through the gateway town of Aquidauana to your fazenda (working ranch) in the southern Pantanal. The landscape transforms as you enter the floodplain — open wetlands, gallery forests, and vast skies. Afternoon: orientation walk around the fazenda — meet the Pantaneiro horses, see the cattle operations, spot the resident caimans and capybaras. Sunset over the wetlands with a cold caipirinha. Dinner: traditional Pantaneiro barbecue, then a night walk with spotlights — caimans’ eyes glow red, night birds call, and the Milky Way stretches unbroken overhead. Overnight fazenda.
Day 2: Horseback Safari & Piranha Fishing
Morning: saddle up for a horseback safari through the Pantanal. Pantaneiro horses are compact, sure-footed, and bred for this terrain — they’ll take you through flooded grasslands, across shallow channels, and into gallery forests where wildlife is abundant. You’ll likely see capybaras, caimans, marsh deer, and an incredible variety of birds from this unique vantage point. Midday rest during the heat. Afternoon: piranha fishing from the riverbank or a small boat. It’s surprisingly easy (piranhas are aggressive feeders) and surprisingly fun — the fish fight hard on light tackle. Your catch becomes part of dinner. Evening: dusk wildlife walk as the wetlands transition from day to night. Overnight fazenda.
Day 3: Canoe Safari & Free Exploration
Dawn wildlife drive or walk to the best viewing areas. Morning: canoe trip through the water channels — the silent approach gets you closer to wildlife. Caimans slide off the banks as you approach, giant river otters fish in the deeper pools, and kingfishers and herons hunt along the shore. Afternoon: choose your adventure — another horseback ride, more fishing, a photography walk, or simply relax in a hammock on the veranda. Evening: sunset boat ride, then one final night of Pantanal stars. Overnight fazenda.
Day 4: Final Morning & Return
Final dawn walk — the wetlands at first light in their full glory. Breakfast at the fazenda. Transfer back to Campo Grande for your onward flight or next adventure.
