Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrival in Moroni, Grande Comore

Arrive at Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport (Moroni, Grande Comore). Transfer to your hotel in Moroni, the capital and largest city of the Comoros, located on the western coast of Grande Comore (Ngazidja) island, with its stunning setting between the ocean and the massive Mount Karthala volcano. Explore Moroni: visit the Old Medina (the historic old town of Moroni, with its narrow winding streets, whitewashed houses with carved wooden doors, ancient mosques, and bustling markets, a beautiful example of Swahili-Arab architecture), the Friday Mosque (the main mosque of Moroni, with its beautiful minaret and stunning architecture, one of the oldest mosques in the Comoros), the Badjanani Mosque (another historic mosque with its beautiful architecture), the Place du 23 Décembre (the main square), and the Moroni Market (a bustling market with its fresh produce, spices, fish, crafts, and clothing). Walk along the Corniche (the waterfront promenade) and enjoy the beautiful views of the ocean and the nearby islands. Visit the Port de Moroni and watch the traditional dhows (wooden sailing boats) coming and going. Evening welcome dinner with Comorian cuisine including langouste (spiny lobster), poisson au coco (fish in coconut sauce), pilao (spiced rice), mkatra siniya (a sweet coconut cake), and fresh tropical fruits. Overnight in Moroni.

Day 2: Mount Karthala Volcano & Lac Sale

Early morning start for a hike up Mount Karthala (if conditions permit), the active volcano that dominates Grande Comore island, the highest point in the Comoros at 2,361 meters, one of the largest active volcanoes in the world, with its massive caldera (3 kilometers wide) and frequent eruptions (the most recent eruptions were in 2005, 2006, and 2007). The hike to the summit takes approximately 4-6 hours round trip, passing through lush rainforest, then volcanic landscapes, with stunning views of the island and the ocean from the summit. At the top, you can see the massive caldera and, if the weather is clear, the other islands of the Comoros (Mohéli, Anjouan, and Mayotte) in the distance. If the volcano is too active or the weather is bad, visit the lower slopes and the rainforest around the volcano, which is home to unique flora and fauna including the Livingstone’s fruit bat (a large endangered bat endemic to the Comoros), the Comoro pigeon, and many species of endemic plants. After the hike, visit the Lac Sale (Salt Lake), a beautiful crater lake near the village of Itsandra, with its stunning turquoise water, surrounded by lush vegetation, a popular spot for swimming and picnicking. Visit the nearby village of Itsandra, one of the oldest villages in the Comoros, with its beautiful beach, ancient mosque, and traditional culture. Visit the Mitsamiouli area (in the north of the island), with its beautiful beaches, the famous Chomoni Beach, and the stunning coastal scenery. Evening return to Moroni. Dinner with local cuisine. Overnight in Moroni.

Day 3: Beaches, Diving & Culture

Morning explore the beautiful beaches of Grande Comore. Visit the Chomoni Beach (a beautiful black sand beach with its stunning rock formations and clear water, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island), the Galawa Beach (a beautiful beach with its calm water and great snorkeling), the Itsandra Beach, and the various coves and bays around the island. Go snorkeling or diving in the crystal-clear waters around Grande Comore, which are teeming with marine life including tropical fish, coral reefs, sea turtles, rays, and dolphins. The Comoros is also one of the best places in the world to see the coelacanth (a rare ancient fish, often called a living fossil, which was thought to be extinct until discovered in the Comoros in 1938). Visit the Coelacanth Museum in Moroni to learn about this fascinating fish. After lunch, visit the various villages around the island, experiencing the traditional Comorian culture. Visit the village of Iconi (a historic village with its beautiful old buildings and the tomb of President Ahmed Abdallah), the village of Vendredi (a village known for its Friday market), and the village of Mutsamudu (if visiting Anjouan island, optional). Visit a traditional perfume workshop (the Comoros is famous for its perfumes and essential oils, particularly ylang-ylang, which is grown on the islands and used in perfumes around the world, including Chanel No. 5). Learn about the distillation process and sample the various essential oils. Visit a vanilla plantation (the Comoros is also a major producer of vanilla, one of the best in the world). Evening enjoy a beach barbecue with fresh seafood and local cuisine. Overnight in Moroni.

Day 4: Moroni Final Day & Departure

Morning free for last-minute exploration of Moroni or a final visit to the beach and medina. Do some last-minute shopping for Comorian products including essential oils (ylang-ylang, vanilla, clove), perfumes, vanilla, traditional crafts, and spices. Visit the Moroni Market for souvenirs and local products. After breakfast, transfer to Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport for your departure flight, or take a flight to Mohéli (Mwali) island for an optional extension to see the pristine beaches, coral reefs, and unique wildlife of the smallest island in the Comoros (Mohéli is home to the Mohéli Marine Park, one of the largest marine protected areas in the Indian Ocean, with its pristine coral reefs, sea turtles, dolphins, and whales).
