Lesotho, a small landlocked kingdom entirely surrounded by South Africa, offers stunning mountain scenery, rich culture, and warm hospitality.

Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrival & Sani Pass

Arrive at Moshoeshoe I International Airport (Maseru, Lesotho), or cross the border from South Africa via the Sani Pass. If arriving via the Sani Pass (one of the most dramatic mountain passes in the world, a steep gravel road climbing from 1,500 meters in South Africa to 2,876 meters at the Sani Top, with 32 hairpin bends and stunning views of the Drakensberg mountains), take a 4×4 vehicle up the pass, enjoying the breathtaking scenery. At the top, visit the Sani Top Lodge (the highest pub in Africa, at 2,876 meters, with stunning views of the Drakensberg and the Sani Pass). Continue into Lesotho, visiting the nearby Basotho villages and experiencing the traditional culture. If arriving in Maseru, explore the capital city: visit the Royal Palace, the Parliament Building, the Maseru Market, the Catholic Cathedral, and the Thaba Bosiu (a historic mountain plateau near Maseru, the royal stronghold of King Moshoeshoe I, the founder of the Basotho nation, with its beautiful views and historic significance). After lunch, drive into the highlands of Lesotho, enjoying the stunning mountain scenery of the Drakensberg (Maloti Mountains), with its rolling green hills, mountain streams, and traditional Basotho villages with their distinctive round huts (rondavels). Visit the Roma Valley (a beautiful valley about 35 kilometers from Maseru, home to the National University of Lesotho and the beautiful Roma Mission, with its stunning scenery and peaceful atmosphere). Evening arrive at your lodge or guesthouse in the mountains. Enjoy a traditional Basotho dinner with local cuisine including papa (cornmeal porridge, the staple food), moroho (spinach), meat stew, and Lesotho beer. Overnight in Lesotho highlands.

Day 2: Maletsunyane Falls & Mokhotlong

Morning drive to the Maletsunyane Falls (near the town of Semonkong, meaning Place of Smoke, approximately 2-3 hours from the Roma Valley), one of the most stunning waterfalls in Southern Africa, a single-drop waterfall plunging 192 meters into a beautiful gorge, with the mist rising from the base creating a smoke-like effect (hence the name Semonkong). The falls are one of the highest single-drop waterfalls in Africa and are a truly spectacular sight. Take a hike to the various viewpoints around the falls, enjoying the stunning views of the waterfall, the gorge, and the surrounding mountains. Optional: abseil (rappell) down the Maletsunyane Falls (the highest commercially abseiled waterfall in the world, at 192 meters, a thrilling adventure for the brave), or take a pony trek (horseback riding) through the beautiful countryside around the falls (pony trekking is a popular activity in Lesotho, with the sure-footed Basotho ponies being the traditional mode of transport in the mountains). After the falls, visit the town of Semonkong and the nearby Basotho villages, experiencing the traditional culture and way of life. After lunch, drive to Mokhotlong (the highest town in Lesotho, at an altitude of 2,300 meters, in the northeastern part of the country, near the border with South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province), enjoying the stunning high-altitude scenery along the way, with the mountains getting higher and the landscape more dramatic. Visit the Thabana Ntlenyana (the highest point in Lesotho and in Southern Africa, at 3,482 meters, located in the Maloti Mountains near Mokhotlong, with its stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains). Visit the source of the Orange River (the longest river in South Africa, which rises in the Maloti Mountains near Mokhotlong). Visit the nearby San Bushman rock art sites (the Drakensberg area is home to thousands of San Bushman rock paintings, some dating back thousands of years). Evening arrive at your lodge in Mokhotlong or the surrounding area. Enjoy a traditional Basotho dinner and the beautiful mountain scenery. Overnight in Mokhotlong area.

Day 3: Thaba-Tseka, Malealea & Departure

Morning drive from Mokhotlong to Thaba-Tseka (a town in the eastern highlands of Lesotho, at an altitude of 2,200 meters, known for its beautiful mountain scenery and traditional Basotho culture), enjoying the stunning high-altitude scenery along the way. Visit the nearby villages and experience the traditional way of life, with the Basotho people herding their sheep and cattle on the mountain slopes, and the distinctive round huts (rondavels) dotting the landscape. Visit the Katse Dam (one of the largest dams in Africa, part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, which supplies water to South Africa, with its stunning architecture and beautiful setting in the Maloti Mountains, at an altitude of 2,000 meters). Visit the Katse Dam viewpoint and the botanical garden at the dam. After lunch, drive to Malealea (a beautiful village in the Mafeteng district of lowland Lesotho, famous for its stunning scenery, traditional culture, and pony trekking), enjoying the beautiful scenery as you descend from the highlands to the lowlands. Visit the Malealea Lodge and the nearby village, experiencing the traditional Basotho culture. Take a short pony trek or hike through the beautiful countryside around Malealea, visiting the nearby San Bushman rock art sites and the beautiful waterfalls. Visit the traditional Basotho village and meet the local people, learning about their culture, traditions, and way of life. After the visit, drive to Maseru (the capital of Lesotho, approximately 1.5-2 hours from Malealea) or to the border crossing with South Africa. Do some last-minute shopping for Basotho products including woolen blankets (the famous Basotho blankets, worn by the Basotho people as part of their traditional dress, with their distinctive patterns and colors), mokorotlo (the traditional Basotho straw hat, shaped like a mountain, a symbol of Basotho identity), Basotho crafts, and local products.
