Embark on an epic 16-day real adventure through Central America, exploring the ancient Maya world from the highlands of Guatemala to the Caribbean coast of Belize and the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico. Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrival in Guatemala City & transfer to Antigua

Arrive at Guatemala City La Aurora Airport. Transfer to Antigua Guatemala (1 hour), the beautiful colonial city surrounded by volcanoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Check into your hostel/hotel. Explore the historic center: Central Park, Cathedral, Arco de Santa Catalina, and the bustling markets. Welcome meeting with your group and leader. Evening welcome dinner at a local comedor (traditional restaurant). Overnight in Antigua.

Day 2: Antigua – Volcano hike & local life

Morning optional hike up Pacaya Volcano (active volcano, 2-3 hours each way, opportunity to see lava flows and roast marshmallows over volcanic heat). Alternatively, explore Antigua: visit the Convento de las Capuchinas, Iglesia de la Merced, Casa Santo Domingo, and the many ruins. After lunch, visit a local coffee farm for a tour and tasting (Antigua is famous for its coffee). Visit the Mercado Central for shopping. Evening group dinner. Overnight in Antigua.

Day 3: Antigua to Lake Atitlán

Morning drive to Lake Atitlán (2.5 hours), one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, surrounded by three volcanoes and a dozen Maya villages. Take a boat across the lake to visit the villages: Santiago Atitlán (largest village, famous Maximón shrine and textile market), San Juan La Laguna (natural dyes and textiles), and Santa Catarina Palopó (colorful painted houses). Meet local Maya artisans and learn about their traditional culture. After lunch, hike or kayak on the lake. Sunset views of the volcanoes. Overnight in Panajachel or a lakeside lodge.

Day 4: Lake Atitlán to Chichicastenango & to Flores/Tikal

Morning (if Thursday or Sunday) visit the famous Chichicastenango Market, one of the largest and most colorful indigenous markets in Central America, where Maya vendors from surrounding villages sell textiles, handicrafts, food, and traditional goods. Visit the Church of Santo Tomás (a unique blend of Catholic and traditional Maya religious practices). After lunch, drive back to Guatemala City and fly to Flores (1 hour) in the Petén region. Transfer to your hotel in Flores or near Tikal. Evening explore the island town of Flores with its colonial architecture and lakeside setting. Overnight in Flores/Tikal.

Day 5: Tikal National Park

Full day at Tikal National Park, one of the greatest Maya archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in the heart of the Petén rainforest. Early morning entry to see the sunrise over the temples (optional, very popular). Explore the ruins: Great Plaza, Temple I (Temple of the Great Jaguar, 47m), Temple II (Temple of the Masks), Temple IV (tallest at 70m, climb for stunning jungle canopy views), North Acropolis, Mundo Perdido (Lost World), Palace, Ball Court. Look for wildlife: howler monkeys, spider monkeys, toucans, coatis, and a variety of birds. Picnic lunch in the park. Afternoon continue exploring the less-visited parts of the site. Evening return to Flores. Group dinner. Overnight in Flores.

Day 6: Yaxhá & border to Belize

Morning visit Yaxhá, a stunning Maya site between two lakes (Yaxhá and Sacnab), less visited than Tikal but equally impressive. Explore: North Acropolis, South Acropolis, Great Plaza, Temple of the Red Hands (well-preserved red hand stencils), beautiful lake views. After lunch, drive to the Belize border at Melchor de Mencos/Santa Elena (2-3 hours). Cross into Belize and continue to San Ignacio/Cayo District (1 hour). Check into your hostel/hotel. Evening explore San Ignacio town, visit the markets, and enjoy Belizean cuisine (rice and beans, stew chicken, fresh seafood). Overnight in San Ignacio.

Day 7: Cayo District – Xunantunich & cave tubing

Morning visit Xunantunich (Stone Woman), a stunning Maya site on a ridge above the Mopan River, with its iconic El Castillo pyramid (40m, second-tallest in Belize) offering panoramic views of Guatemala. Cross the river by hand-cranked ferry. Explore the ruins: El Castillo, Plaza, palaces, ball court. After lunch, go cave tubing – float on inner tubes through a series of spectacular limestone caves with stalactites, stalagmites, and ancient Maya artifacts. Fun adventure for all. Evening return to San Ignacio. Group dinner. Overnight in San Ignacio.

Day 8: Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave or Caracol

Morning optional: Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave, one of the most incredible Maya archaeological sites, a cave system accessible only by swimming, hiking, and climbing through water. Inside: ancient Maya pottery, artifacts, and the famous Crystal Maiden (a calcified skeleton of a young woman believed to be a human sacrifice). This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience but physically demanding. Alternatively, visit Caracol, the largest Maya site in Belize, located deep in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, with its massive Caana pyramid (43m, tallest in Belize) and beautiful jungle setting. After lunch, relax or explore more of the Cayo District. Evening group dinner. Overnight in San Ignacio.

Day 9: San Ignacio to Belize City & to Placencia

Morning drive to Belize City (2 hours). Visit the Government House Museum, Supreme Court, St. John Cathedral (oldest Anglican cathedral in Central America), Swing Bridge, and Belize Museum. After lunch, fly or drive to Placencia (1 hour flight or 3 hours drive), a beautiful beach village on the Caribbean coast of southern Belize, known for its stunning beaches, laid-back vibe, and excellent seafood. Check into your beachfront hostel/hotel. Afternoon relax on the beach, swim in the Caribbean, or explore the village with its famous sidewalk (the narrowest main street in the world). Evening seafood dinner on the beach. Overnight in Placencia.

Day 10: Placencia – Snorkeling & marine adventure

Full day snorkeling trip to the Belize Barrier Reef (second-largest barrier reef in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Visit the Silk Cayes Marine Reserve or Gladden Spit: snorkel among vibrant coral reefs, tropical fish, sea turtles, rays, and possibly nurse sharks. Day 11: Placencia to Cancún, Mexico

Day 12: Tulum & Playa del Carmen

Morning visit Tulum, the only Maya site on the coast, with stunning cliff-top setting overlooking the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Explore: Castillo (main temple), Temple of the Frescoes (beautiful murals), Temple of the Descending God, Great Palace, beach. After exploring, enjoy time on the beautiful Tulum beach. Day 13: Chichén Itzá & Valladolid

Morning visit Chichén Itzá, UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Explore: Pyramid of Kukulkan (El Castillo), Great Ball Court (largest in Mesoamerica), Temple of the Warriors, Group of a Thousand Columns, Sacred Cenote, Observatory (El Caracol), Temple of the Jaguars. Visit nearby cenote Ik Kil for a refreshing swim in a beautiful natural sinkhole with hanging vines. After lunch, visit colonial Valladolid: Convent of San Bernardino de Siena, Cenote Suytun, historic center. Evening return to Cancún/Playa del Carmen. Group dinner. Day 14: Uxmal & Mérida

Morning visit Uxmal, UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for distinctive Puuc architecture with intricate stone mosaics. Explore: Pyramid of the Magician (oval pyramid unique in Maya architecture), Nunnery Quadrangle (beautiful mosaic facades), Governor Palace (massive facade of mosaic stonework), Great Pyramid, Ball Court. After lunch, drive to Mérida (1.5 hours), the White City, capital of Yucatán. Explore historic center: Plaza Grande, Cathedral, Casa de Montejo, Paseo de Montejo (beautiful mansions), markets. Day 16: Departure from Cancún
