10-Day Angola: Baia dos Tigres, Cunene River & Southern Tribes Expedition

Day 1: Arrive Luanda — Fly to Lubango

Arrive Luanda, connect to Lubango. Afternoon: Lubango orientation. Overnight Lubango.

Day 2: Tundavala Fissure & Namibe

Tundavala Fissure (1,200m drop). Descend the Serra da Leba (11 hairpins, 1,600m drop). Arrive Namibe — coastal desert city. Overnight Namibe.

Days 3-4: Baía dos Tigres — The Ghost Island

Drive south along the coast to the Kunene River mouth, then cross into the Tômbwa Peninsula for the 4×4 expedition to Baía dos Tigres. This abandoned settlement — a Portuguese fishing village cut off when the sea breached the sand spit connecting it to the mainland — is now a ghost town of decaying colonial houses, an empty church, and rusting boats. The surrounding beaches are pristine, empty, and home to huge Cape fur seal colonies. Two days exploring: walk the abandoned streets of the ghost town, visit the seal colonies, fish with local fishermen, camp on wild beaches with zero light pollution. Nights: tented camp on the beach under the Milky Way.

Day 5: Cunene River Mouth & Welwitschia

Return north via the Cunene River mouth — a rich estuary attracting flamingos, pelicans, and wading birds. Dolphins frequently surf the waves where the river meets the Atlantic. Search for Welwitschia mirabilis plants in the surrounding Namib Desert — some specimens exceed 1,500 years. Overnight near Cunene.

Days 6-7: Virei, Mucubal & Mwila Tribes

Day 6: Virei — 4,000-8,000 year-old rock paintings and engravings. Afternoon: Mucubal semi-nomadic settlement — ochre warriors, beaded women. Day 7: Kimbo village — Mwila women with iconic red-stone dreadlocks and cowrie shells. Full cultural immersion day. Overnight Namibe.

Day 8: Namibe & Return to Lubango

Morning: Arco Lagoon (natural rock arch), Namibe’s markets and Portuguese colonial center. Afternoon: drive up Serra da Leba for epic photo stops at every hairpin. Arrive Lubango. Overnight Lubango.

Day 9: Lubango to Luanda

Morning: Lubango’s Cristo Rei and Huíla market. Afternoon flight to Luanda. Farewell dinner. Overnight Luanda.

Day 10: Departure

Transfer to Luanda Airport.
