Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Dakar to Sine-Saloum Delta

Morning departure from Dakar heading south along the Petite Cote coastline. First stop at Joal, one of Senegal’s largest fishing ports, to witness the bustling morning fish market and the colorful return of fishing pirogues. Continue to Fadiouth, a remarkable island entirely built from millions of accumulated clam and oyster shells. Walk across the wooden bridge to this shell-island, visit its unique multi-faith cemetery (Christians and Muslims buried side by side), tour the granaries built on stilts over the water, and explore the artisan market. Lunch at a local restaurant specializing in fresh seafood. Continue to Ndangane on the edge of Sine-Saloum Delta. Check into your lodge (Les Cordons Bleus or similar). Evening pirogue cruise as the sun sets over the mangroves.

Day 2: Sine-Saloum Delta Pirogue Exploration

Full day exploring the Sine-Saloum Delta by traditional motorized pirogue. Navigate through the maze of mangrove-lined bolongs (tidal channels), observing the rich birdlife including pink-backed pelicans, African fish eagles, pied kingfishers, goliath herons, great white egrets, and seasonal flocks of greater flamingos. Visit remote Serer and Niominka fishing villages accessible only by water, where traditional lifestyles continue largely unchanged. Stop at Sipo Island, known as the Queen of Sipo’s domain, for a cultural encounter with the local community. Picnic lunch on a secluded sandbank or beach. Learn about oyster harvesting from mangrove roots and traditional fishing techniques. Return to lodge for dinner.

Day 3: Toubacouta & Saloum River Villages

After breakfast, drive to Toubacouta, a charming village on the edge of the delta. Board another pirogue for exploration of the northern Saloum channels. Visit Mar Lothie, a traditional Serer village, and learn about millet cultivation, peanut farming, and village governance under the local chief. Afternoon visit to Keur Samba, a community-based eco-lodge project that supports local women’s cooperatives. Participate in a traditional cooking class learning to prepare thieboudienne (fish and rice, Senegal’s national dish) and yassa poulet (chicken marinated in lemon and onion). Dinner featuring the dishes you helped prepare.

Day 4: Fathala Wildlife Reserve & Mangrove Forest Walk

Morning excursion to the Fathala Wildlife Reserve (just across the Gambian border in Senegal’s territory), a 2,000-hectare protected area with West African wildlife including western giant eland, roan antelope, zebras, giraffes, buffalo, warthogs, and various monkey species. Guided safari walk or game drive (optional, additional fee). Afternoon return to Sine-Saloum for a guided walk through the mangrove ecosystem, learning about the crucial role mangroves play in coastal protection, fish nurseries, and carbon sequestration. Visit the sacred baobab forest of Dassilame Serere. Sunset drinks on the Saloum River. Farewell dinner with traditional Serer music.

Day 5: Return to Dakar / Departure

Morning birdwatching walk along the mangroves for last wildlife sightings. After breakfast, visit the thousand-year-old baobab tree of Fadial, a massive specimen with spiritual significance to the Serer people. Stop at Mbour’s vibrant artisanal market for last-minute Senegalese crafts. Arrive in Dakar by late afternoon. Transfer to the airport or your Dakar hotel.
