Ilulissat Icefjord Explorer: 8-Day Disko Bay Arctic Wonder

Day 1: Arrive Ilulissat — Iceberg Capital of the World

Arrive at Ilulissat Airport. Transfer to Hotel Arctic (4.5★) — the world’s most northerly 4-star hotel, perched on the edge of the UNESCO Icefjord. Welcome drink on the terrace overlooking a fjord filled with skyscraper-sized icebergs. Evening orientation walk along the Icefjord boardwalk. Traditional Greenlandic welcome dinner.

Day 2: UNESCO Icefjord & Sermermiut Valley

Morning hike through the Sermermiut Valley — an ancient Inuit settlement site where people have lived for over 4,000 years. Visit archaeological remains of three distinct cultures: Saqqaq, Dorset, and Thule. Reach the viewpoint at the mouth of the Icefjord — watch icebergs the size of city blocks slowly navigate the narrow fjord mouth. Afternoon visit to the Ilulissat Museum (birthplace of Arctic explorer Knud Rasmussen).

Day 3: Midnight Sun Iceberg Cruise

Free morning to explore Ilulissat. Afternoon dog sled demonstration (wheeled sleds in summer) — meet Greenlandic sled dogs and learn about this essential Arctic tradition. Evening: the legendary midnight iceberg cruise. Sail among the towering giants of Disko Bay as the sun circles the horizon without setting (May-July). The blue-white ice glows in golden midnight light — one of the Arctic’s most spectacular experiences.

Day 4: Eqi Glacier — The Calving Giant

Full-day boat expedition 80km north to Eqi Glacier (Eqip Sermia) — one of Greenland’s most active calving glaciers. The 5km-wide glacier face regularly drops house-sized chunks of ice into the sea with thunderous roars. Spend several hours anchored at a safe distance watching this spectacular natural show. Onboard lunch with glacier views. Return to Ilulissat in the evening.

Day 5: Inuit Culture & Settlement Visit

Morning visit to Ilimanaq — a traditional settlement south of Ilulissat, accessible only by boat. Walk among colorful wooden houses with only 50 residents. Visit the restored historic buildings now serving as boutique accommodation. Afternoon: hands-on cultural experience — learn about traditional kayak building, sealskin processing, and Greenlandic drum dancing from local artisans.

Day 6: Disko Island Day Trip

Ferry to Qeqertarsuaq on Disko Island — a volcanic island with basalt columns, hot springs, and black sand beaches unlike anywhere else in Greenland. Hike to the Lyngmarksbræen glacier for panoramic views of Disko Bay. Visit the natural science station. Explore the unique geology of this volcanic anomaly in a land of ice. Return to Ilulissat.

Day 7: Icefjord Kayaking & Farewell

Morning sea kayaking among the smaller icebergs near Ilulissat — a uniquely intimate perspective on these frozen giants. Afternoon hike to the abandoned settlement of Sermermiut. Visit the local fish market where the day’s catch arrives. Farewell dinner featuring Greenlandic halibut and musk ox at one of Ilulissat’s renowned restaurants.

Day 8: Departure

Final morning on the Hotel Arctic terrace watching the eternal iceberg parade. Transfer to Ilulissat Airport for departure — carrying memories of Earth’s greatest ice spectacle.
