Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Fly El Calafate, Transfer to El Chaltén
Arrive El Calafate airport. Drive 3 hours across the Patagonian steppe to El Chaltén (population ~2,000), Argentina’s self-proclaimed “National Capital of Trekking.” Founded in 1985 (Argentina’s youngest town), it was created specifically to secure Argentine sovereignty over the disputed border area. The town sits in the shadow of Mount Fitz Roy (3,405m), whose silhouette — visible from the main street — is the Patagonia logo. Despite being only 3,405m (modest by Andean standards), Fitz Roy is considered one of the most technically difficult mountains on Earth. The Tehuelche called it “Chaltén” (smoking mountain) because clouds perpetually shroud its summit; Francisco Moreno named it after Captain Robert FitzRoy of HMS Beagle, Charles Darwin’s captain. Day 2: Laguna de los Tres — The Classic Fitz Roy View
The signature hike: 24km round trip to Laguna de los Tres at the base of Fitz Roy. The trail climbs through lenga and ñire forests, emerging onto the alpine zone at Laguna Capri (beautiful but just the appetizer). The final kilometer climbs 400m of steep moraine to Laguna de los Tres (1,160m), a glacial lake at the very foot of Fitz Roy. The view: Fitz Roy in the center, flanked by Cerro Poincenot and Aguja Saint-Exupéry, their granite spires reflected in the lake’s turquoise water. Glaciers cling to their flanks, and condors circle the summits. On clear days, the Southern Patagonian Ice Field stretches to the horizon. The Patagonia clothing company’s logo is based on this view, seen by founder Yvon Chouinard on his 1968 ascent. 24km, 1,000m ascent, 8-10 hours. Overnight in El Chaltén.
Day 3: Cerro Torre — The Impossible Mountain
Hike the Cerro Torre trail (22km round trip) to Laguna Torre. The trail follows the Fitz Roy River valley with views of the Adela range and the Torre massif ahead. At the lake: Cerro Torre (3,128m), the most iconic unclimbable peak in mountaineering history — a 1,200m vertical granite needle topped by a mushroom of rime ice that grows up to 50m thick. Cesare Maestri’s controversial 1970 “compressor route” (he drilled 400 bolts up the southeast ridge using a gas-powered compressor) is still debated — did he reach the summit, or did his compressor break down 100m from the top? The debate is Patagonia’s greatest mountaineering mystery. Walk to the Mirador Maestri for the classic view of Cerro Torre with icebergs from the Grande Glacier floating in the lake. 22km, 400m ascent, 6-8 hours. Overnight in El Chaltén.
Day 4: Loma del Pliegue Tumbado — The Panorama View
Climb Loma del Pliegue Tumbado (1,500m) — the best panoramic viewpoint in the Fitz Roy area, with simultaneous views of Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre, the Viedma Glacier, and Lago Viedma. The trail is steep but steady, rising above the tree line to stark alpine terrain. The 360° panorama from the summit ridge encompasses the entire Southern Patagonian Ice Field to the west and the endless steppe to the east. 22km, 1,100m ascent, 7-8 hours. Overnight in El Chaltén.
Day 5: Viedma Glacier Ice Trek
Full-day excursion: boat across Lago Viedma to the Viedma Glacier, the largest glacier in Argentina. Strap on crampons and spend 3 hours trekking on the glacier surface — negotiate crevasses, squeeze through ice caves of brilliant blue, and walk among seracs. The Viedma is less visited than Perito Moreno, making the experience more intimate. The ice surface is constantly changing; no two treks are the same. Return to El Chaltén. Overnight in El Chaltén.
Day 6: Huemul Circuit Day or Free Exploration
For experienced hikers: attempt the first section of the Huemul Circuit (requires harness + tyrolean traverse equipment, guided only) — one of Patagonia’s wildest treks with views of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. For others: choose from shorter trails: Chorrillo del Salto waterfall (easy, 3km), Mirador de los Cóndores for sunset, or relax in El Chaltén’s microbrewery scene — the town has an improbable density of craft beer for its size. Overnight in El Chaltén.
Day 7: El Chaltén to El Calafate & Depart
Morning walk to Mirador de los Cóndores for a final sunrise over Fitz Roy. Drive back to El Calafate. Optional: visit the Glaciarium or the Laguna Nimez bird reserve (flamingos, black-necked swans). Fly to Buenos Aires.
