Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Addis Ababa
Transfer to hotel. Afternoon city tour: National Museum (Lucy), Holy Trinity Cathedral, and the view from Mount Entoto. Welcome dinner. Overnight in Addis.
Day 2: Fly to Gondar — The Camelot of Africa
Flight to Gondar. Visit the Royal Enclosure — a 17th-century castle complex built by Emperor Fasilides and his successors, unlike anything else in sub-Saharan Africa. See the Debre Berhan Selassie Church with its famous ceiling of angel faces. Afternoon at Fasilides’ Bath. Overnight in Gondar.
Day 3-4: Simien Mountains National Park
Drive to the Simien Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Africa’s most dramatic landscapes. Two days of trekking among jagged peaks, deep gorges, and Afro-alpine meadows. Spot gelada baboons (endemic), walia ibex, and the magnificent lammergeier (bearded vulture). Overnight at Simien Lodge.
Day 5: Axum
Drive to Axum through stunning mountain scenery. Visit the Stelae Park, Queen of Sheba’s Palace ruins, and the Church of St. Mary of Zion. Overnight in Axum.
Day 6-7: Danakil Depression
Fly/drive to Mekele, then into the Danakil. Day 6: Dallol’s psychedelic sulfur landscape and salt caravans. Day 7: Erta Ale volcano and its permanent lava lake. Overnight in basic camps.
Day 8: Lalibela
Return to Mekele and fly to Lalibela. Afternoon exploring the Northern Group of rock churches. Overnight in Lalibela.
Day 9: Lalibela — Full Day
Complete exploration: Bet Giyorgis (St. George), the Southern Group, and a mule ride to Asheton Maryam, a monastery perched on a mountain with breathtaking views. Overnight in Lalibela.
Day 10: Bale Mountains National Park
Fly to Addis, then drive to Bale Mountains. Afternoon trek on the Sanetti Plateau (4,000m) — Africa’s largest Afro-alpine habitat. Spot Ethiopian wolves (the world’s rarest canid), mountain nyala, and giant molerats. Overnight at Bale Mountain Lodge.
Day 11: Return to Addis & Depart
Morning game drive, then return to Addis. Last-minute shopping at Merkato. Transfer to Bole Airport.
