Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Dili

Welcome to Dili, capital of Asia’s youngest country (independence 2002). Airport transfer. Afternoon orientation walk along the waterfront — see the Government Palace and the Cristo Rei statue visible across the bay. Sunset at a beachside restaurant. Overnight in Dili.

Day 2: Dili — History & Resilience

Morning at the Resistance Museum, documenting Timor-Leste’s 24-year struggle for independence — a powerful and moving experience. Visit the Santa Cruz Cemetery, site of the 1991 massacre that galvanized international support. Afternoon at the Tais Market for traditional handwoven textiles (tais), each region with distinctive patterns. Sunset hike to Cristo Rei, a 27-meter Jesus statue standing on a headland. Overnight in Dili.

Day 3: Atauro Island — Marine Paradise

Ferry or water taxi to Atauro Island, 25km north of Dili. The waters around Atauro have some of the highest marine biodiversity on Earth — scientists have recorded over 600 reef fish species in a single site. Morning snorkeling or diving off Beloi Beach. Afternoon hike through traditional villages. Overnight in basic eco-accommodation on Atauro.

Day 4: Atauro — Mountains & Reefs

Morning hike to Manucoco peak (995m) for panoramic views of Wetar Strait and the surrounding islands. Afternoon snorkeling — the coral gardens here are among the most pristine in Southeast Asia. Overnight on Atauro.

Day 5: Maubisse & the Highlands

Return to Dili, then drive into the central highlands to Maubisse, a picturesque mountain town at 1,400 meters with cool air and Portuguese-era colonial buildings. Visit coffee plantations — Timor’s coffee is shade-grown, organic, and world-renowned. Overnight in Maubisse.

Day 6: Mount Ramelau — Summit Sunrise

Pre-dawn departure for Mount Ramelau (Tatamailau), Timor-Leste’s highest peak at 2,963 meters. 3-hour hike to the summit for sunrise — on clear days you can see both the north and south coasts of the island. At the summit sits a statue of the Virgin Mary, a pilgrimage site. Descend and drive to Baucau. Overnight in Baucau.

Day 7: Baucau & East Coast

Explore Baucau, Timor-Leste’s second city with beautiful Portuguese colonial architecture. Visit the old market, the swimming pool built into the natural springs (Piscina de Baucau), and nearby beaches. Afternoon return to Dili. Farewell dinner of Timorese specialties. Overnight in Dili.

Day 8: Depart Dili

Morning at the Dili waterfront. Last chance for tais textiles. Transfer to Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport.
