Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Mariehamn via Stockholm or Helsinki
Arrive in Mariehamn by ferry from Stockholm (5.5 hours) or Helsinki (overnight). Check into your hotel and pick up your rental bicycle. Evening ride along the western shore to the Badhusberget viewpoint for your first panorama of Åland’s famously flat, green, island-dotted seascape. Overnight in Mariehamn.
Day 2: Mariehamn to Kastelholm Loop (35km)
Cycle north through rolling farmland and birch forests to Kastelholm Castle. The medieval fortress sits serenely on a lake island, its red walls reflected in still water. Continue to the Bomarsund ruins — the massive Russian fortress walls, now overgrown with wildflowers, stretch for kilometers through the forest. The visitor center tells the dramatic story of the 1854 battle. Lunch at a local farm cafe (try Ålandspannkaka — semolina pancake with stewed plums, a local specialty). Return to Mariehamn via the scenic eastern shore. Overnight in Mariehamn.
Day 3: Island-Hopping to Vårdö (45km)
Today’s ride crosses to the eastern archipelago. Take the small cable ferry to Vårdö and explore the quiet island roads where you’ll meet more bicycles than cars. Stop at the Sandvik village harbor, where wooden fishing boats bob in a protected bay. Continue to the Sältingskär trail, a boardwalk through ancient forest to an observation tower with 360-degree views of the archipelago. Picnic lunch. Return via the Vårdö Ferry, watching for white-tailed eagles overhead. Overnight in Mariehamn.
Day 4: Western Archipelago & Eckerö (50km)
Ride west to Eckerö, passing the massive red-granite Eckerö Post and Customs House (1828), built by Russia’s Tsar Nicholas I as the western terminus of the empire’s postal route — a building absurdly grand for an island of 900 people. Continue to the Degersand beach, a long stretch of sand perfect for a Baltic swim. Visit the hunting and fishing museum. Cycle back via the Hammarland rural roads, perhaps stopping at a farm for fresh-pressed apple juice. Farewell dinner at a Mariehamn harbor restaurant. Overnight in Mariehamn.
Day 5: Mariehamn & Depart
Morning visit to the Maritime Museum and the Pommern windjammer — essential Åland. Afternoon ferry departure.
