Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Datong — Huayan Temple

Welcome to Datong, the capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty. Visit Huayan Temple (Liao Dynasty 1038, rebuilt 1140). The only surviving Liao-era temple complex in China, with the largest bronze Buddha still used for ceremonies in China. The temple is a fusion of Tang, Liao, and Jin Dynasty architecture. Walk the original Song Dynasty-era pavilions. Visit the Shanxi-style wooden pagoda and the Liao-era imperial Buddhist library. Overnight in Datong.

Day 2: Yungang Grottoes & Hanging Temple

Morning at Yungang Grottoes (UNESCO). The 100+ year construction project (453-525 AD) left 252 caves with 51,000+ Buddhist sculptures. Notable caves include Cave 16-20 (the earliest, with Indian Gandharan-style figures) and Caves 5-13 (showing the transition to Chinese Tang style). Afternoon visit to the Hanging Temple (491 AD) on the cliffs of Mount Heng, the “Northern Mountain” (one of China’s Five Sacred Mountains). Walk the suspended wooden planks and narrow wooden walkways. Drive to Mount Wutai via Taiyuan. Overnight at Wutaishan.

Day 3: Mount Wutai — Buddhist Temples

Full day exploring Mount Wutai (Wutaishan) — one of China’s four Buddhist sacred mountains, famed as the bodhisattva Manjushri’s home. Visit Tayuan Temple (854 AD) with the famous White Pagoda (75m tall) — the largest surviving Tang-era structure. Walk through the Buddhist temples of Xiantong (Tang Dynasty, the second-oldest wooden Buddhist temple in China), Shuxiang (with 50,000+ statues), and the 1,500-year-old Dailuo Ding pagoda. Continue to the most beautiful Pusa Ding Temple (every name translates to one of the 5 levels of Buddhist awakening). Afternoon meditation session at Nanchan Temple (782 AD, China’s oldest surviving wooden structure). Overnight at Wutaishan.

Day 4: Bodhisattva Summit & Depart

Pre-dawn hike to Bodhisattva Summit (1,884m), the highest peak in Wutaishan. Watch the sunrise over the eastern Yellow Sea horizon. Visit the 5 surviving temples on the upper summit area, with wide views of the eastern valleys. After the pilgrimage loop, descend via cable car. Lunch. Transfer to Taiyuan Wusu Airport (3 hours drive) or Xinzhou West station (1 hour drive) for the bullet train to Beijing/Xi’an.
