Day 1: Sani Pass — Ascend Africa’s Roof
Depart from Underberg or Himeville at the foot of the Drakensberg Mountains. Board a specially equipped 4×4 Land Cruiser driven by guides holding advanced 4×4 driving and search-and-rescue qualifications. Begin the legendary Sani Pass ascent — a winding gravel road climbing 1,332 meters in just 9 kilometers through dramatic switchbacks carved into the Drakensberg escarpment. Stop at the historic Good Hope Trading Post (established 1917). Cross into Lesotho at Sani Top (2,874m) — crowned “the highest pub in Africa.” Enjoy a welcome drink while taking in panoramic views stretching over the KwaZulu-Natal midlands far below. Continue into the Maluti Mountains, passing remote Basotho villages where shepherds tend flocks wrapped in traditional Basotho blankets. Overnight in a mountain lodge near the highlands.
Day 2: Maletsunyane Falls & Cannibal Caves
Morning drive to Semonkong — meaning “Place of Smoke” in Sesotho, named for the mist rising from Maletsunyane Falls. The waterfall plunges 192 meters in a single dramatic drop, making it one of the highest single-drop waterfalls in Africa. During summer months, witness the world’s longest commercially operated single-drop abseil (204m) down the face of the falls — an optional activity for thrill-seekers. Hike along the gorge rim for spectacular photo opportunities. Afternoon visit to the nearby Cannibal Caves — these sandstone overhangs tell a dark chapter of Lesotho’s history from the Lifaqane (Difaqane) wars of the 1820s-1830s, when famine drove some communities to desperate measures. After exploring the caves, visit a local Basotho village to meet shepherds and learn about traditional mountain life. Overnight near Semonkong.
Day 3: Dinosaur Footprints & Return
Morning trek to the dinosaur footprints site — well-preserved trackways of three-toed dinosaurs that roamed this landscape over 200 million years ago during the Triassic-Jurassic period. These remarkable fossils are evidence that Lesotho was once part of the Gondwana supercontinent. Visit a local craft market where women weave traditional Basotho hats (mokorotlo) and blankets. Afternoon descent via the Sani Pass, pausing at viewpoints for final photographs of the Drakensberg. Arrive back in Underberg by late afternoon.
