Day 1: Sofia to Bansko
Morning transfer from Sofia to Bansko, Bulgaria’s premier mountain town nestled at the foot of the Pirin Mountains. At 925 meters elevation, Bansko serves as the gateway to Pirin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Afternoon orientation walk through Bansko’s Old Town: the Holy Trinity Church with its 30-meter stone bell tower, the Velyanova House with its 19th-century frescoes, and the mehana-lined cobblestone streets. Equipment check and tour briefing with your mountain guide. Welcome dinner at a traditional Bansko mehana with hearty Bulgarian mountain cuisine — kapama (slow-cooked meat and rice), bob chorba (bean soup), and warm banitsa pastries. Overnight at a 3-star hotel in Bansko.
Day 2: Mount Vihren Summit (2,914m)
Early morning transfer to Vihren Hut (1,950m) at the base of Mount Vihren, the highest peak in Pirin. Begin the challenging ascent to Vihren’s summit (2,914m), the second-highest peak in Bulgaria and the Balkans. The trail winds through marble karst terrain, past the formation known as the Marble Pig, and across exposed ridges with spectacular views of the surrounding Pirin range and the distant Aegean Sea on clear days. Summit at Vihren’s peak with its iconic stone marker, taking in the 360-degree panorama that stretches from the Rila Mountains in the north to Mount Olympus in Greece. Descend via the Kazana cirque, a glacial amphitheater with year-round snow patches. Total hiking time: 7-8 hours, elevation gain: 970m. Return to Bansko for a well-earned rest.
Day 3: Pirin National Park — Popovo Lake & Glacier Circuit
Transfer to Gotse Delchev Hut (1,400m) for a day exploring the heart of Pirin National Park. Hike into the Bezbog cirque past the pristine Bezbog Lake, continuing across a high pass to reach Popovo Lake (2,234m) — the largest and deepest glacial lake in Pirin, known for its intense blue-green color. Picnic lunch on the shores of the lake surrounded by marble peaks. The trail continues through the Kremenski Lakes group, a chain of seven glacial lakes at the foot of Dzhangal Peak (2,730m). Observe the transition from subalpine to alpine terrain, with edelweiss, gentian, and the rare Pirin poppy in bloom (July-August). Total hiking time: 6-7 hours. Return to Bansko.
Day 4: Transfer to Rila Mountains — Rila Monastery
Morning transfer from Bansko through the Razlog Valley into the Rila Mountains, crossing the Predel Pass. Visit Rila Monastery, Bulgaria’s spiritual heart and a UNESCO World Heritage masterpiece. Founded in the 10th century by the hermit St. Ivan Rilski, the monastery features extraordinary National Revival architecture — black, white, red, and gold striped arcades surrounding the largest monastic courtyard in the Balkans. Tour the main church with its gold-leaf iconostasis and the 14th-century Hrelyo Tower. Visit the monastery museum to see Rafail’s Cross — a wooden cross carved from a single piece of wood with 104 biblical scenes and 650 miniature figures, carved over 12 years by a monk who went blind completing it. Afternoon free to explore the monastery’s surroundings and absorb its timeless atmosphere. Overnight at a mountain hotel near the Seven Rila Lakes trailhead.
Day 5: The Seven Rila Lakes Circuit
Ride the chairlift from Pionerska Hut (1,585m) to Rilski Ezera Hut (2,135m), the gateway to the Seven Rila Lakes — Bulgaria’s most iconic natural landmark. Begin the circuit hike past each of the seven glacial lakes, each named after its characteristic shape: The Tear (Salzata), The Eye (Okoto) — the deepest at 37.5m with intense blue color, The Kidney (Babreka) with its steep granite walls, The Twin (Bliznaka) — the largest by area, The Trefoil (Trilistnika), The Fish Lake (Ribnoto) — the shallowest, and The Lower Lake (Dolnoto). Each lake sits at a different elevation (2,095m to 2,535m), creating a staircase of turquoise, sapphire, and emerald water. Picnic lunch at the Kidney Lake with views down to the valley floor 1,200 meters below. Total hiking time: 5-6 hours. Overnight at Rila mountain hotel.
Day 6: Malyovitsa Valley & the White Brotherhood
Drive to the Malyovitsa Valley, the traditional cradle of Bulgarian mountaineering and alpinism. Hike through ancient spruce forests to the Malyovitsa Hut (1,960m) beneath the dramatic 300-meter north face of Mount Malyovitsa — the most famous rock climbing face in Bulgaria. Continue to Malyovitsa Lake (2,370m) in the cirque below the peak, surrounded by glacial moraines and dwarf pine. On the trail, learn about the White Brotherhood (the Universal White Brotherhood), the mystical spiritual movement founded by Bulgarian philosopher Peter Deunov that holds the Seven Rila Lakes as sacred. Every August, thousands of followers in white gather near Kidney Lake for paneurhythmy — a sacred circle dance to greet the sunrise. Total hiking time: 5-6 hours. Return to mountain accommodation.
Day 7: Mount Musala Summit (2,925m) — The Roof of the Balkans
The tour’s pinnacle day. Early transfer to Borovets resort and ride the gondola to Yastrebets Peak (2,369m). Begin the ascent to Mount Musala (2,925m), the highest peak in Bulgaria and the entire Balkan Peninsula. The trail crosses the Musala cirque, passing several glacial lakes including the icy Musala Lake at 2,700m, before the final rocky ridge climb to the summit. At the peak, stand at the roof of the Balkans: a 360-degree panorama encompassing the entire Rila mountain range, the Pirin Mountains to the south, the Rhodopes to the east, and on exceptionally clear days, the Aegean Sea and Mount Olympus in Greece. Visit the summit meteorological station (one of Bulgaria’s highest buildings) and the chapel dedicated to St. Elijah. Descend back to Borovets for the farewell dinner celebrating your achievement of summiting two of Europe’s great peaks. Total hiking time: 7-8 hours, elevation gain: 556m. Overnight in Borovets.
Day 8: Borovets to Sofia Departure
Leisurely morning in Borovets, Bulgaria’s oldest mountain resort established in 1896. Optional short walk to the Tsarska Bistritsa, the former royal hunting lodge of the Bulgarian tsars. Transfer to Sofia. Depending on your flight time, a brief city tour of Sofia’s highlights or direct airport transfer. End of tour. Zhiv biozdrav! (Stay alive and healthy — the traditional Bulgarian mountain blessing.)
