Day 1: Arrive Palma — Cathedral & Old Town
Arrive Palma de Mallorca Airport, transfer to your 4★ hotel in Palma’s old town. Afternoon: begin your Mallorca immersion at La Seu Cathedral — this Gothic masterpiece rises from the old city walls, its 44m nave one of the highest in Europe and its vast rose window (13.8m diameter, 1,236 pieces of stained glass) projecting kaleidoscopic light onto the sandstone floor. Day 2: Valldemossa — Chopin’s Mountain Retreat
Morning drive into the Serra de Tramuntana to Valldemossa (25 minutes from Palma). This exquisite stone village — flower-draped, cobbled, and impossibly picturesque — is dominated by the Real Cartuja de Valldemossa, a 14th-century Carthusian monastery that achieved lasting fame in the winter of 1838-39 when Frédéric Chopin and George Sand (the French novelist) spent three months here. Tour Chopin’s cell (Cell 4) with his original Pleyel piano — it was here, inspired by the mountain silence and the sound of raindrops on the monastery roof, that Chopin composed his haunting Raindrop Prelude (Op. 28, No. 15). George Sand’s scathing account of their stay (A Winter in Mallorca, 1841) brought the island international fame. Explore the monastery’s cloistered gardens, the 18th-century pharmacy with its ceramic jars still in place, and the Palace of King Sancho. Afternoon: walk Valldemossa’s stone lanes lined with cafes serving coca de patata (the village’s famous potato pastry), browse artisan shops, and enjoy the mountain views from the Mirador de Miranda. Day 3: Sóller & Port de Sa Calobra — Valley of Gold & The Tie Knot
Morning drive to Sóller. Ride the beloved Ferrocarril de Sóller — a vintage wooden tram from 1913 that clanks and rattles through orange and lemon groves connecting Sóller town to Port de Sóller’s horseshoe bay. Sóller’s ‘Valley of Gold’ earned its name honestly — taste fresh-squeezed orange juice at a Plaça Constitució cafe, explore the modernist Can Prunera, and photograph the Sant Bartomeu church. From Sóller, drive the spectacular Ma-10 mountain road into the high Tramuntana. Today’s unforgettable section: the descent to Sa Calobra via the Carretera de Sa Calobra — the ‘Tie Knot’ road, engineered by Antonio Parietti in 1932, featuring a 270-degree hairpin that crosses under itself plus 11 additional switchbacks dropping 800 meters in just 13km. At the bottom lies Sa Calobra, where a 200m pedestrian tunnel through the cliff leads to the Torrent de Pareis — a breathtaking natural amphitheater of 300m limestone walls where a seasonal stream meets the sea. Day 4: Deià — Artists’ Village & Departure
Morning visit to Deià, Mallorca’s most beautiful village — honey-colored stone houses tumbling down a pine-clad hillside to the sea. This tiny settlement of 600 people has attracted creative souls for over a century. Visit Ca n’Alluny, the house where Robert Graves — poet, novelist (I, Claudius), and mythologist — lived for 56 years (1929-1985). His study remains exactly as he left it, with views over the garden he planted himself and the Mediterranean beyond. Walk down to Cala Deià, a rocky cove wedged between cliffs where the ramshackle fish restaurant Ca’s Patro March (featured in the BBC series The Night Manager) hangs over the water. Lunch on grilled fish with your feet almost in the sea, then one last swim in Mallorca’s crystal-clear waters.
