Day 1: Arrive Palermo — Arab-Norman Capital
Arrive Palermo. Afternoon: orientation walk through the historic center — Quattro Canti (the baroque “Four Corners”), Piazza Pretoria’s Fountain of Shame, and the Palatine Chapel’s glittering Byzantine mosaics. Evening: Palermo street food tour in the Vucciria and Ballarò markets. Overnight Palermo.
Day 2: Monreale & Cefalù — Golden Mosaics & Medieval Charm
Morning: Monreale Cathedral’s breathtaking 6,340m² golden mosaics and cloister. Afternoon: drive east to Cefalù, one of Italy’s most beautiful medieval towns. Cefalù’s Norman Cathedral (1131) has an extraordinary Christ Pantocrator mosaic in its apse. Climb La Rocca for panoramic views of the town clustered around its harbor, or swim at the golden beach. Continue to Milazzo for overnight.
Day 3: Ferry to Lipari — The Aeolian Heart
Morning hydrofoil from Milazzo to Lipari (1 hour), the largest of the seven Aeolian Islands. Afternoon: explore Lipari town — the 16th-century Castello fortress atop the ancient Greek acropolis (panoramic views), the excellent Archaeological Museum with one of the world’s best collections of Neolithic obsidian tools and Greek theatrical masks. Swim at Canneto’s white pumice beach or the dramatic Faraglioni rock formations. Evening: dinner of fresh swordfish and Aeolian capers at a harbor restaurant. Overnight Lipari.
Day 4: Panarea & Stromboli — The Volcano of Fire
Full-day boat excursion. Morning: Panarea, the smallest and most glamorous of the Aeolians — whitewashed houses, bougainvillea-covered lanes, and the prehistoric Bronze Age village of Capo Milazzese (14th century BC) overlooking Cala Junco cove. Swim in crystalline waters. Afternoon: cruise to Stromboli, continuously erupting for over 2,000 years — the ancient Greeks called it the “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean.” Explore the whitewashed village of San Vincenzo with its black sand beaches. At sunset, your boat positions offshore as darkness falls — then the show begins. Stromboli’s summit crater erupts every 10-20 minutes, launching incandescent lava bombs that trace fiery arcs against the night sky. It’s one of nature’s most spectacular displays. Return to Lipari late evening. Overnight Lipari.
Day 5: Salina — The Green Island of Malvasia
Morning boat to Salina, the greenest Aeolian island with its dramatic twin volcanic peaks — Monte Fossa delle Felci and Monte dei Porri. Salina is famous for its Malvasia delle Lipari sweet wine and capers (the Aeolian variety is prized worldwide). Visit the village of Lingua with its salt lake, the Caravaglio winery for Malvasia tasting, and the town of Santa Marina Salina. Afternoon hike or swim at Pollara, the dramatic volcanic crater bay where the film Il Postino was shot (the beach house still stands). Return to Lipari. Overnight Lipari.
Day 6: Ferry to Milazzo & Catania
Morning ferry back to Milazzo. Drive south to Catania (2 hours). Afternoon: explore Catania’s baroque center — the Piazza del Duomo, Elephant Fountain, and raucous fish market. Try horse meat arancini at a traditional rosticceria — a uniquely Catanese delicacy. Evening dinner in the atmospheric old town. Overnight Catania.
Day 7: Mount Etna — Summit of Fire
Full day on Mount Etna. Cable car to 2,500m followed by 4×4 vehicles to the summit crater zone at 3,350m. Walk with a volcanologist guide among steaming fumaroles, recent lava flows, and the active summit craters. On clear days, panoramic views stretch to the Aeolian Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea — you’ll spot Stromboli and Lipari on the horizon. Afternoon: visit a family-run Etna winery where vines grow in volcanic soil, producing distinctive mineral-driven wines. Overnight Catania.
Day 8: Taormina — Greek Theatre Over the Sea
Full day in Taormina, Sicily’s most glamorous hill town. Morning: the Greek Theatre (3rd century BC), spectacularly positioned on a cliff edge with Mount Etna smoking in the background and the Ionian Sea below — possibly the most dramatically sited ancient theatre in the world. Stroll the Corso Umberto with its medieval palazzos, luxury boutiques, and gelato shops. Afternoon: visit the Public Gardens (Giardini della Villa Comunale), a lush botanical paradise created by an English noblewoman. Swim at Isola Bella, a tiny island nature reserve connected to the beach by a narrow sandbar. Farewell dinner at a terrace restaurant with sunset views over Etna. Overnight Catania or Taormina.
Day 9: Departure
Transfer to Catania Fontanarossa Airport for departure.
