Day 1: Arrive Banjul — Welcome to the Smiling Coast
Arrive at Banjul International Airport. The Gambia immediately charms with its warmth — both the tropical climate and the genuinely welcoming people. Transfer to your hotel in the coastal resort area. Afternoon: orientation visit to Bakau, including the famous Kachikally Crocodile Pool — a sacred pool where over 80 Nile crocodiles live. Locals consider the water blessed; visitors can (carefully) touch a crocodile under the watchful eye of pool guardians. Evening: sunset on the beach with fresh seafood. Overnight near Banjul.
Day 2: Banjul — Capital & Culture
Morning: explore Banjul, one of Africa’s smallest capitals. Visit the National Museum for an excellent overview of Gambian history and culture. Climb Arch 22, a 35-meter archway that offers panoramic views over the city and the Atlantic. Afternoon: explore Albert Market, Banjul’s vibrant central market — a sensory explosion of colors, spices, fabrics, and bargaining. Visit the bustling fishing port at Denton Bridge, where colorful pirogues unload the day’s catch. Overnight near Banjul.
Day 3: Kunta Kinteh Island & Juffureh — Roots
A deeply moving day. Morning ferry across the Gambia River to Barra, then drive to Albreda and Juffureh. Here, in the 1760s, a young Mandinka man named Kunta Kinteh was captured by slave traders and taken to America — his story, traced by descendant Alex Haley, became the global phenomenon ‘Roots’ (1976). Visit the Slavery Museum in Albreda, then take a pirogue to Kunta Kinteh Island (UNESCO World Heritage) — a tiny island in the river where the ruins of Fort James still stand. This was one of the most notorious slave trading posts on the West African coast, holding captives before shipment across the Atlantic. Walking among the crumbling fort walls, the weight of history is overwhelming. Afternoon: meet the 7th-generation descendants of the Kinteh family in Juffureh village — they’ve maintained their oral history across 250 years and still welcome visitors to the family compound. Overnight Tendaba Camp on the riverbank.
Day 4: River Gambia Cruise & Bao Bolong
Full day on the River Gambia, one of Africa’s great waterways. Morning boat cruise through the mangroves of Bao Bolong Wetland Reserve — a RAMSAR site teeming with birdlife: pelicans, herons, fish eagles, and the occasional West African manatee. The riverbanks are lined with mangrove forests where monkeys leap between branches. Afternoon: cruise upstream to Tendaba, with stops at riverside fishing villages to experience rural Gambian life. Sunset on the river, with hippos surfacing in golden light. Overnight Tendaba.
Day 5: Wassu Stone Circles & Georgetown
Morning drive to Wassu to visit the mysterious stone circles — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over 1,000 laterite stone pillars, some weighing several tons, arranged in circles dating from the 3rd century BC to the 16th century AD. Their purpose remains unknown (burial sites? astronomical observatories?). The circles are the largest concentration of megaliths in the world outside of Stonehenge — yet virtually unknown to tourists. Afternoon: continue to Georgetown (now Janjanbureh), a colonial-era town on MacCarthy Island, with its faded 19th-century architecture and peaceful river setting. Overnight Georgetown.
Day 6: Baboon Island & River Gambia National Park
Boat trip to the River Gambia National Park (Baboon Islands), a group of five islands that form one of Africa’s most important primate sanctuaries. The islands are home to the Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Project — over 100 chimpanzees live wild on the islands, descendants of rescued orphans. Watch from the boat as chimp families come to the riverbank to feed and play. The islands also host red colobus monkeys, green vervets, hippos, and an extraordinary 270+ bird species. Evening return to Georgetown. Overnight Georgetown.
Day 7: Georgetown to Makasutu — Transition
Morning exploring Georgetown: the slave house museum, the old commissioner’s quarters, and the peaceful colonial cemetery overlooking the river. Afternoon drive back west toward the coast, stopping at Brikama (Gambia’s second city) for its famous woodcarving market and craft workshops. Arrive at Makasutu Cultural Forest, a 1,000-hectare private reserve of gallery forest, mangroves, and savannah. Overnight Makasutu (eco-lodge).
Day 8: Makasutu Cultural Forest — Full Immersion
Makasutu means “holy forest” in Mandinka, and the name fits. Full day exploring the forest: morning canoe trip through the mangrove creeks (look for baboons on the banks), guided nature walk spotting monitor lizards, hornbills, and the occasional bush pig. Visit a traditional palm wine tapper to watch (and taste) palm wine being collected. Afternoon: cultural encounter with a Mandinka village within the forest — learn about traditional medicine, music (the kora — a 21-string harp-lute — is the Gambia’s signature instrument), and village life. Sunset by the river, fireflies emerging. Overnight Makasutu.
Day 9: Coastal Relaxation — Beach Day
Morning at Makasutu for a final forest walk. Late morning transfer to the coast — Gambia’s famous Atlantic beaches with their golden sand stretching for miles. Afternoon: enjoy the beach, swim in the warm Atlantic, visit the fishing communities at Tanji (the best place to see the colorful fishing fleet return with the day’s catch). Farewell dinner at a beachfront restaurant — fresh barracuda, grilled lobster if in season, and a spectacular West African sunset. Overnight coastal resort.
Day 10: Departure
Morning at leisure on the beach. Transfer to Banjul International Airport. The Gambia is small, but it stays big in your memory — the warmth of its people, the power of Kunta Kinteh Island, and the gentleness of the river.
