Day 1: Arrive Fogo — The Fire Island
Fly to Fogo from Praia or Sal. Transfer to São Filipe, the island’s colonial capital with cobblestone streets and pastel sobrado houses. Afternoon exploration: the colorful municipal market, historic center views of the volcano dominating the skyline. Welcome dinner of Fogo specialties: goat cheese, volcanic wine, and fresh tuna. Overnight São Filipe.
Day 2: Chã das Caldeiras — Into the Crater
Drive up the volcano’s flank to Chã das Caldeiras, the village inside Fogo’s main crater. Walk through the 2014 lava flow that destroyed parts of the village—houses buried to their roofs in black volcanic rock. Visit the interpretive center and meet the resilient community that rebuilt. Afternoon acclimatization hike to the 1951 lava flow. Wine tasting at a crater-floor vineyard. Overnight Chã das Caldeiras (basic accommodation).
Day 3: Pico do Fogo Summit
Pre-dawn start for the 5-6 hour ascent. Climb through lava fields—jagged aa, smooth pahoehoe—as sunrise illuminates the Atlantic. Reach the smoking crater at 2,829m: peer into the volcanic vent, see the entire island spread below, and feel the thrill of standing on one of Africa’s most dramatic peaks. Descend for celebratory lunch. Transfer to São Filipe. Overnight São Filipe.
Day 4: Cidade Velha UNESCO & Santiago
Morning flight to Santiago. Full day exploring Cidade Velha (Ribeira Grande), a UNESCO World Heritage site: the first European colonial town in the tropics (founded 1462). Walk the cobblestone streets where Christopher Columbus stopped, see the 16th-century Royal Fortress overlooking the valley, and visit the pelourinho (whipping post), a haunting reminder of the slave trade. Afternoon in Praia: the bustling Sucupira Market for batik fabrics and local crafts. Overnight Praia.
Day 5: Departure
Morning in Praia. Transfer to the airport for departure, carrying memories of volcano summits and Creole history.
