5-Day Paraguay Highlights: Asunción, Iguazú Falls & Jesuit Missions

Day 1: Arrive Asunción — Colonial Capital

Arrive in Asunción, known as the ‘Mother of Cities’ for spawning the colonization of the Río de la Plata. Afternoon exploration: Palacio de López glowing pink at sunset, the Panteón Nacional, and Casa de la Independencia. Walk the Costanera riverfront with locals sipping tereré (cold yerba mate). Welcome dinner: authentic sopa paraguaya and asado. Overnight Asunción.

Day 2: Jesuit Missions — Trinidad & Jesús de Tavarangue

Morning flight or drive to Encarnación in southern Paraguay. Full day exploring the UNESCO-listed Jesuit Missions: La Santísima Trinidad del Paraná, the largest and best-preserved mission, where the church facade rises dramatically from the red earth and the famous bell tower staircase appears in ‘The Mission’ film. Continue to Jesús de Tavarangue, a beautifully preserved mission with its unique Mudéjar-influenced architecture. Learn about the extraordinary Jesuit-Guaraní society that flourished here for 150 years before expulsion. Overnight Encarnación.

Day 3: Encarnación & Itaipú Dam

Morning at Encarnación’s Costanera, Paraguay’s most popular beach on the Paraná River—golden sand imported for the city’s transformation. Cross to Ciudad del Este, Paraguay’s frenetic border city. Visit the Itaipú Dam, the world’s second-largest hydroelectric plant—a binational marvel between Paraguay and Brazil. The sheer scale of this engineering feat, holding back one of the world’s great rivers, is staggering. Overnight Ciudad del Este.

Day 4: Iguazú Falls — The Devil’s Throat

Cross the Friendship Bridge into Brazil for the day’s highlight: Iguazú Falls. From the Brazilian side you get the definitive panorama—275 waterfalls stretching 2.7km, with the Devil’s Throat sending spray 80 meters into the air. Walk the catwalk to the edge of the Devil’s Throat for a drenching, unforgettable close-up. The roar of water, the rainbows arcing through mist, and toucans flying above the jungle canopy. This is one of the planet’s greatest natural spectacles. Overnight Ciudad del Este.

Day 5: Morning Market & Departure

Morning at Ciudad del Este’s famous shopping zone—one of the world’s largest duty-free areas. Cross back to Brazil for your flight from Foz do Iguaçu International Airport, or return to Asunción. Paraguay will have surprised you at every turn.
