Day 1: Durban to Drakensberg — Royal Natal National Park
Depart Durban, climbing from the Indian Ocean coast into the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg mountains — a UNESCO World Heritage site of extraordinary natural beauty and San rock art. Arrive at Royal Natal National Park. Afternoon short hike to Tiger Falls. Check into mountain lodge with views of the Amphitheatre — one of the world’s most impressive cliff faces. Overnight Drakensberg.
Day 2: Amphitheatre Hike — World’s Second-Highest Waterfall
Full-day hike to the top of the Amphitheatre via the famous chain ladders. This is one of Southern Africa’s iconic day hikes: climb through indigenous forest and protea-studded grasslands to the escarpment edge. Stand at the top of the Tugela Falls — the world’s second-highest waterfall at 948m — and peer over the edge into Lesotho. Views stretch across KwaZulu-Natal to the distant ocean on clear days. Return to lodge. Overnight Drakensberg.
Day 3: Sani Pass — Into Lesotho
Transfer to Himeville. Ascend the legendary Sani Pass by 4×4, crossing the South Africa-Lesotho border at 2,874m. Descend into Lesotho’s rugged interior. Afternoon visit to a traditional Basotho village. Learn about the Basotho blanket — each pattern significant to different life events — and sample local cuisine. Overnight in the Lesotho highlands.
Day 4: Malealea — Pony Trek Country
Drive through the spectacular “Gates of Paradise” pass to Malealea. Afternoon pony trek into the surrounding mountains — the Basotho pony is the traditional transport of Lesotho and navigating steep terrain is second nature to these sure-footed animals. Ride to the Botsoela Waterfall and visit a village school supported by the lodge’s community trust. Evening music: Malealea’s resident band is legendary among overland travelers. Overnight Malealea.
Day 5: Semonkong & Maletsunyane Falls
Full-day journey across the highlands to Semonkong. The drive traverses Lesotho’s highest plateaus with views of terraced fields and rondavel villages. Arrive at Semonkong — “Place of Smoke.” Afternoon visit to Maletsunyane Falls, Southern Africa’s highest single-drop waterfall plunging 204 metres into a dramatic gorge. For the brave: the world’s longest commercial abseil down the falls face. Overnight Semonkong.
Day 6: Highland Villages & Basotho Culture
Morning at leisure — optional short hikes, pony rides, or simply absorbing the mountain silence. Afternoon deeper cultural immersion: visit a remote highland village, meet a traditional healer (sangoma), watch mohair wool being spun, and taste traditional Basotho beer (joala) brewed from sorghum. Farewell dinner under the stars. Overnight Semonkong.
Day 7: Descent to Maseru
Final morning in the Mountain Kingdom. Descend to Maseru — the contrast between highland simplicity and the lowland capital is striking. Visit the Maseru craft market for last-minute Basotho blankets, tapestries, and mohair products. Transfer to Maseru Airport or continue to Johannesburg.
