Pilgrimage Route of Japan: 9-Day Cherry Blossom Shikoku, Koyasan & Kumano Kodo

Day 1: Arrive Osaka — Cherry Blossom Welcome

Arrive at Kansai International Airport (early April). Transfer to Osaka. Evening stroll along Okawa River — one of Osaka’s premier cherry blossom spots with 4,800 trees. Welcome dinner featuring spring kaiseki with sakura-themed dishes. Overnight in Osaka.

Day 2: Himeji Castle in Full Bloom

Bullet train to Himeji. Visit Himeji Castle — Japan’s most beautiful feudal fortress, its white walls framed by over 1,000 cherry trees in full bloom. The castle’s Sannomaru bailey is one of Japan’s iconic cherry blossom views. Afternoon: cross the Shimanami Kaido bridges to Shikoku Island. Evening arrival in Takamatsu.

Day 3: Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage — Sakura Edition

Begin the Shikoku pilgrimage among cherry blossoms. Visit Ryozenji (Temple 1) where ancient cherry trees frame the temple gates. Continue to Gokurakuji (Temple 2) and Konsenji (Temple 3). Afternoon at Zentsuji — the temple built on Kobo Daishi’s birthplace, its grounds carpeted in pink petals. Collect temple stamps in your nokyocho as cherry blossoms drift through the air.

Day 4: Ritsurin Garden & Naruto Whirlpools

Morning at Ritsurin Garden — a feudal daimyo garden where manicured pines, ponds, and tea houses are enhanced by April cherry blossoms. Afternoon to Naruto for the powerful whirlpool phenomenon. Evening exploration of Takamatsu’s cherry blossom-lit harbor.

Day 5: Mount Koya — Sakura Among the Cedars

Journey to sacred Mount Koya. Unlike lowland Japan, Koyasan’s elevation means cherry blossoms peak later — experience sakura among ancient cedar forests and Buddhist temples. Visit Okunoin cemetery where cherry petals drift among 200,000 moss-covered tombstones. Evening: temple lodging (shukubo) with shojin ryori and morning prayers. Meditate in a temple garden framed by blooming cherry trees.

Day 6: Kumano Kodo Spring Trail

Descend into the Kii Peninsula. Walk the Kumano Kodo’s Daimonzaka section — the ancient stone staircase now lined with cherry blossoms and fresh spring greenery. Arrive at Kumano Nachi Taisha with its 133m waterfall — Japan’s tallest — surrounded by cherry blossoms. Overnight at an onsen ryokan, soaking in thermal waters under cherry trees.

Day 7: Kumano Sanzan Completion

Visit Kumano Hongu Taisha — the giant torii gate rising from rice paddies framed by sakura. Continue to Kumano Hayatama Taisha with its sacred Nagi tree. Receive your Dual Pilgrim certificate. Afternoon journey to the Ise-Shima region.

Day 8: Ise Grand Shrine — Spring Renewal

Visit Ise Grand Shrine — Japan’s most sacred Shinto sanctuary, surrounded by ancient forest that has sheltered pilgrims for millennia. Cherry blossoms here symbolize renewal and the cycle of life embodied by the shrine’s 20-year rebuilding tradition. Afternoon return to Osaka. Farewell cherry blossom dinner.

Day 9: Departure

Transfer to Kansai Airport. Depart with sacred memories of Japan’s pilgrimage routes in their most beautiful season.
