Day 1: Arrive Algiers — Orientation
Welcome to Algeria! Arrive at Algiers airport and transfer to your hotel. Meet your expedition leader for a comprehensive briefing on the journey ahead — the logistics of the Sahara, the Tuareg guides who will lead you, and what to expect from five nights of desert camping. Afternoon at leisure to rest after your flight or explore central Algiers independently — the Casbah, the Grande Poste, or the waterfront. Day 2: Fly to Djanet — Into the Sahara
Early morning transfer to Algiers airport for your domestic flight to Djanet, the oasis gateway to Tassili n’Ajjer National Park. The flight is an adventure in itself — watching the landscape transform from Mediterranean coast to Atlas Mountains to the endless sand seas of the central Sahara. Upon arrival in Djanet, meet your Tuareg team — the drivers, cooks, and guides who will be your companions for the next five days. After loading the 4×4 vehicles, you head into the desert. The road gives way to sand and rock as you enter the Tassili plateau, a landscape of sculpted sandstone that looks like a Salvador Dali painting come to life. Arrive at your first camp location as the sun sets, setting the sky and rocks ablaze with color. Day 3: Tin Merzouga Red Dunes & Moul N’Aga Formations
Wake to a Saharan sunrise — there is nothing like watching the desert come alive with light. After breakfast, explore the Tin Merzouga area, where massive red sand dunes sweep up against dramatic sandstone formations. Hike to the top of the largest dune for a 360-degree panorama of sand and rock stretching to every horizon. Then into the Moul N’Aga area — one of Tassili’s most extraordinary landscapes, where wind erosion has carved the sandstone into arches, pillars, and shapes that resemble animals, faces, and castles. The scale is hard to comprehend — some formations tower 50 meters high. Your Tuareg guide leads you through narrow corridors between the rocks to hidden clearings. Lunch in the shade of a rock overhang. Afternoon: visit your first rock art shelter, seeing the paintings that have made Tassili n’Ajjer a UNESCO World Heritage site — vivid scenes of cattle herds, wildlife, and humans, painted 8,000-10,000 years ago when the Sahara was green. Day 4: Sefar Gallery — The Greatest Prehistoric Art Collection
A day that ranks among the greatest archaeological experiences on Earth. Drive to the Sefar plateau, home to the densest concentration of prehistoric rock art in the world. This is the “Sistine Chapel of the Sahara” — thousands upon thousands of individual paintings covering rock walls across a vast area. The paintings show a lost world: elephants, hippopotamuses, rhinoceroses, giraffes, antelopes, and cattle in enormous herds. But most striking are the human figures — the mysterious “Round Head” figures of the earliest period, with their large heads, elaborate body decorations, and enigmatic postures that have led some to call them “Martian gods.” Scientists date these paintings from 15,000 to 6,000 years before present — making them among the oldest art on Earth. Spend hours exploring different shelters, each revealing different chapters of the Sahara’s transformation from lush savannah to the world’s largest desert. Day 5: Jabbaren Gallery & Tuareg Cultural Immersion
Morning drive to the Jabbaren plateau — Jabbaren means “giants” in Tuareg, referring to the monumental scale of some paintings here. Like Sefar, Jabbaren has thousands of paintings, but with its own distinct character — more pastoral scenes of cattle herding, showing the intimate relationship between prehistoric people and their animals. The paintings’ preservation is remarkable, with colors — reds, browns, whites, and yellows — that remain vivid after millennia of desert exposure. After lunch, a day of Tuareg cultural immersion. Your guides teach you about traditional desert survival: finding direction by the stars, locating underground water sources, reading animal tracks, and recognizing edible desert plants. Learn the art of the Tuareg tea ceremony — three rounds, each with a specific meaning, each poured from a height to create the perfect foam. Try wrapping a tagelmust (the indigo turban-veil that gives Tuareg men their name “Blue Men of the Desert”). Day 6: Hidden Galleries & Farewell Sunset in the Dunes
Your final full day in the Tassili. Visit lesser-known galleries away from the main sites — the advantage of traveling with Tuareg guides who know every shelter in this vast region. Some of these hidden sites have never been properly documented, their paintings known only to local families for countless generations. This is privilege of the deepest kind — to stand before 10,000-year-old art in silence, without another tourist in sight. Afternoon hike through the “Labyrinth” — a maze of sandstone corridors where every turn reveals new rock formations and occasional hidden paintings. Late afternoon: return to the Tin Merzouga dunes for the final Saharan sunset — a moment of pure stillness as the sand turns from gold to orange to deep red and the first stars appear. Day 7: Return to Djanet → Fly to Algiers
Final Saharan sunrise — one last cup of sweet tea beside the dying embers of the campfire. Break camp and drive back to Djanet. Visit the Djanet palm grove and the local market, where you can buy Tuareg silver jewelry, leather goods, and indigo fabrics directly from artisans. Afternoon flight back to Algiers. Transfer to your hotel. Evening free to enjoy a hot shower and a comfortable bed — luxuries you’ve lived without for five days. Farewell dinner at one of Algiers’ best restaurants.
