Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Montserrat — The Emerald Isle

Fly or ferry from Antigua to Montserrat. Known as “The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean” for its lush green hills and Irish heritage, Montserrat is unlike any other Caribbean island. Settle into your guesthouse in the safe northern zone. Afternoon orientation: visit Little Bay — the new port and center of life since the volcano. Overnight in the north.

Day 2: Plymouth — The Modern Pompeii

An extraordinary day. Drive to the exclusion zone boundary for a government-licensed tour of Plymouth, the capital buried by the Soufrière Hills Volcano. When the volcano erupted in 1995 after 400 years of dormancy, Plymouth was evacuated and eventually entombed in volcanic ash and pyroclastic flows. Today, it’s a ghost city: buildings buried to their second floors, the clock tower of the ruined parliament, the stone cathedral half-filled with ash. It’s haunting, educational, and profoundly moving. Visit the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) to learn about ongoing monitoring from the scientists who live and work on the volcano. Evening: video presentation at MVO showing the eruption’s history. Overnight in the north.

Day 3: Garibaldi Hill & Richmond Hill — Living with the Volcano

Hike Garibaldi Hill for dramatic views over the exclusion zone, the steaming volcano dome, and the buried city. The contrast between the verdant north and the gray devastation of the south is stark. Visit Richmond Hill and St. George’s Hill to understand how Montserratians have adapted to living with an active volcano — the two-thirds of the island in the exclusion zone remains off-limits. Afternoon: visit the National Museum in Little Bay. Overnight in the north.

Day 4: Irish Heritage & St. Patrick’s Day Culture

Montserrat is the only country outside Ireland where St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday — here it commemorates a failed slave rebellion in 1768. Visit the St. Patrick’s Cooperative, where local artisans create crafts. Explore the remains of the old sugar plantations and learn about Montserrat’s complex history of Irish indentured servants, African slaves, and the unique Afro-Irish culture that emerged. Afternoon: hike the Oriole Walkway Trail in the Centre Hills — look for the Montserrat oriole (Icterus oberi), the critically endangered national bird found nowhere else. Overnight in the north.

Day 5: Rendezvous Bay — The Only White Sand Beach

Hike (or boat) to Rendezvous Bay — Montserrat’s only white sand beach, a hidden gem accessible only by trail or sea. Spend the day swimming in crystal-clear water looking up at the jungle-covered cliffs. Picnic on the beach. Snorkel along the rocky headlands. This is the Caribbean as it was before tourism — wild, pristine, and yours alone. Overnight in the north.

Day 6: Woodlands Beach & Air Studios

Visit Woodlands Beach on the northwest coast — a black volcanic sand beach fringed with palm trees. Swim and relax. Afternoon: visit the ruins of Sir George Martin’s legendary AIR Studios, where the Rolling Stones, Elton John, and Paul McCartney recorded in the 1980s. The studio was destroyed by Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and never rebuilt, but its ruins and the historical plaques tell a fascinating story of Montserrat’s time as a music mecca. Evening: local night at a bar in Brades — Montserratian goat water (stew), bush rum, and soca music. Farewell dinner. Overnight in the north.

Day 7: Depart Montserrat

Morning at Little Bay. Ferry or flight to Antigua for international connection.
