Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Bishkek — Gateway to the Tian Shan

Touch down at Manas International Airport. Transfer to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan’s leafy capital. Afternoon orientation: Ala-Too Square with its changing-of-guard ceremony, the State Historical Museum, and the monumental statue of Manas — the mythical hero whose 500,000-line epic poem is the world’s longest. Walk through Oak Park, one of Central Asia’s most pleasant urban green spaces. Welcome dinner at a traditional restaurant: lagman (hand-pulled noodles with meat and vegetables), manti (steamed dumplings), and kymyz (fermented mare’s milk — the national drink). Overnight in Bishkek.

Day 2: Bishkek — Burana Tower — Issyk-Kul Lake

Drive east through the Chuy Valley. Visit the Burana Tower — an 11th-century minaret rising from the Silk Road city of Balasagun, birthplace of the philosopher Yusuf Khass Hajib. The surrounding field is dotted with balbals — ancient Turkic stone grave markers, silent warriors from a millennium past. Continue to Issyk-Kul, the “Warm Lake” — the world’s second-largest alpine lake (after Titicaca), so deep (668m) and saline that it never freezes despite being at 1,607m elevation. Arrive at Cholpon-Ata on the northern shore. Afternoon: eagle hunting demonstration — watch a berkutchi (eagle hunter) and his golden eagle perform this ancient tradition inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Overnight in a lakeside yurt camp — your first taste of nomadic life, sleeping in a felt tent under a sky full of stars.

Day 3: Issyk-Kul — Skazka Canyon & Barskoon Waterfall

Morning kayaking on Issyk-Kul’s crystal-clear waters with the snow-capped Tian Shan as backdrop. Then drive along the southern shore to Skazka (Fairy Tale) Canyon — a surreal landscape of red, orange, and yellow sandstone formations sculpted by wind and water into castles, dragons, and mythical creatures. Continue to Barskoon Gorge: hike to the 80m Barskoon Waterfall cascading over volcanic cliffs. Legend says Genghis Khan’s army watered their horses here. Visit the monument to Yuri Gagarin, who loved vacationing on Issyk-Kul’s shores after his historic spaceflight. Overnight in yurt camp near Tamga.

Day 4: Dolon Pass — Tash Rabat Caravanserai (3,150m)

The grand Silk Road day. Drive south over the 3,030m Dolon Pass into the At-Bashy region of the inner Tian Shan. The landscape transforms into high-altitude steppe — vast grasslands where only yaks and nomads’ herds graze. Arrive at Tash Rabat, one of the world’s best-preserved Silk Road caravanserais. Built in the 15th century into a mountainside at 3,150m, this massive stone structure with 31 rooms, domed halls, and dungeon-like corridors served as a fortress-monastery-inn for merchants crossing the Tian Shan between China and Central Asia. Walk through the labyrinthine interior and imagine camel caravans laden with silk, spices, and ideas sheltering here from snowstorms. Overnight in a yurt camp beside Tash Rabat — the altitude makes the stars impossibly bright.

Day 5: Panda Pass Trek (4,025m)

Full-day trek to Panda (Tash Rabat) Pass at 4,025m. The trail climbs through alpine meadows blooming with edelweiss and gentians. At the pass, panoramic views stretch over the endless Tian Shan peaks, with Chatyr-Kul Lake glinting on the Chinese border in the distance. This was the frontier of empires — Chinese, Persian, Turkic, and Russian influences all converged on these high passes. Descend back to Tash Rabat. Evening: soak in the silence of the high mountains, with only the sound of wind and occasional yak herder’s call. Overnight in yurt camp.

Day 6: Tash Rabat — Kochkor — Song-Kul Lake (3,016m)

Drive to Kochkor, where Kyrgyz women demonstrate the centuries-old art of shyrdak (felt carpet) making — cutting intricate patterns from colored felt, a skill passed through generations. After lunch, ascend to Song-Kul Lake at 3,016m — the crown jewel of Kyrgyzstan’s jailoo (summer pastures). This vast alpine lake, surrounded by rolling grasslands and 4,000m peaks, has been the summer home of Kyrgyz nomads for millennia. Arrive at your yurt camp on the shore. As dusk falls, watch herds of horses gallop freely across the steppe. Dinner: beshbarmak (“five fingers” — boiled mutton with noodles, eaten with hands as the name suggests). The milky way stretches horizon to horizon at this altitude. Overnight in a Song-Kul yurt.

Day 7: Song-Kul — Horseback Riding Across the Pastures

A day of pure nomadic life. Morning horseback ride across the jailoo — gallop across the wide-open grasslands with the wind in your face, just as Kyrgyz nomads have done for 2,000 years. Visit shepherd families in their yurts — share a bowl of kymyz, watch cheese being made, and learn how these hardy people thrive at altitude with no electricity or running water. Afternoon: cycling along the lake shore OR kayaking on Song-Kul’s pristine waters. Evening around the campfire — a Kyrgyz akyn (folk singer) may perform traditional songs accompanied by the three-stringed komuz. Overnight in yurt.

Day 8: Return to Bishkek

Dawn farewell to Song-Kul — watch the sunrise paint the mountains pink. Drive back to Bishkek (6-7 hours) through ever-changing landscapes: high passes, river valleys, and finally the fertile Chuy plain. Afternoon: visit Osh Bazaar, Bishkek’s sprawling central market — a sensory explosion of spices, dried fruits, fresh bread, and Kyrgyz handicrafts. Farewell dinner at Supara Ethno-Complex, a traditional restaurant in a yurt village setting. Overnight in Bishkek.

Day 9: Depart Bishkek

Morning at leisure. Visit the State Museum of Fine Arts for a final dose of Kyrgyz culture. Transfer to Manas Airport. Jakshy baryngyz — safe journey!
