Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive N’Djamena — Chad’s Young Capital

Land at N’Djamena International Airport. Meet your YPT guide. Transfer to hotel. Afternoon: orientation tour of N’Djamena — visit the Grande Mosquée (Great Mosque), the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de la Paix, and the National Museum of Chad housing artifacts from the Sao civilization (a people of “giants” in local legend). Evening: welcome dinner at a local restaurant featuring Chadian cuisine — try boule (millet porridge) with sauce gombo and grilled capitaine fish. Overnight in N’Djamena.

Day 2: Lake Chad — Lifeline of the Sahel

Day trip to Lake Chad — once one of Africa’s largest lakes, now a fraction of its former size, it remains the vital lifeline for millions. Visit fishing villages where communities have adapted to the shrinking lake. Boat excursion to see migratory birds (pelicans, flamingos, marabou storks) and the distinctive floating islands of papyrus. Meet local Buduma fishermen who navigate the lake on traditional reed boats. Overnight in N’Djamena.

Day 3: Sahel Journey — Gaoui & the Sao Civilization

Drive through the Sahel to Gaoui village, said to be the capital of the ancient Sao civilization. The Sao people, according to oral tradition, were a race of giants who inhabited the Lake Chad basin from the 6th century BCE. Gaoui is famous for its distinctive traditional architecture — rounded mud-brick houses decorated with geometric patterns — and its pottery, made by women using techniques passed down for millennia. Visit the Gaoui Museum. Continue to the Chari-Baguirmi region to meet nomadic Arab herders. Overnight in N’Djamena.

Days 4-5: The Guerewol Festival — Wodaabe Courtship Celebration

The highlight of the trip. Journey to the festival grounds (location varies as the Wodaabe are nomadic). The Guerewol is one of Africa’s most extraordinary cultural events — a week-long courtship ritual where young Wodaabe men compete in elaborate beauty contests to win wives. The men spend hours painting their faces with intricate designs using ochre, kaolin, and charcoal, highlighting their eyes, teeth, and features. Dressed in embroidered robes and feathers, they perform the Yaake dance — a hypnotic, hour-long display where they roll their eyes and flash their teeth to demonstrate beauty and stamina. Young women watch from the sidelines, selecting their favorites. You’ll have two full days to immerse yourself in this remarkable festival — photograph (with permission), learn Wodaabe customs from your guide, and witness a tradition that has endured for centuries in one of the world’s harshest environments. Two nights camping with the festival.

Day 6: Return Journey — N’Djamena

Return drive to N’Djamena with stops at villages and markets along the way. Afternoon: visit the N’Djamena Central Market and the Artisanal Center for souvenirs — Tuareg silver jewelry, Wodaabe embroidered textiles, and leatherwork. Farewell dinner. Overnight in N’Djamena.

Day 7: Depart N’Djamena

Airport transfer. Bon voyage from the Dead Heart of Africa — though you’ll leave knowing it’s anything but dead.
