Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Chania
Land at Chania Airport. Transfer to your hotel in the Old Town. Evening: walk through the Venetian Harbor — the lighthouse, the Mosque of the Janissaries, and the waterfront restaurants. Welcome dinner at a Cretan taverna in the Old Town’s backstreets. Overnight in Chania.
Day 2: Chania Old Town & Venizelos Tombs
Morning guided walk through Chania’s Old Town: the Venetian Harbor, the covered Municipal Market (fresh Cretan produce, cheese, honey, and herbs), the leather street (Skrydlof) where traditional Cretan boots are still handmade, and the Etz Hayyim Synagogue (restored 1999, the only synagogue on Crete). Afternoon: climb to Venizelos Tombs for panoramic views of the city and the White Mountains. Evening: sunset at the Venetian Harbor. Overnight in Chania.
Day 3: Rethymnon — Venetian & Ottoman Heritage
Day trip to Rethymnon (1 hour drive). Walk the best-preserved Renaissance city on Crete: the Fortezza (16th-century Venetian fortress), the Rimondi Fountain with its lion-head spouts, the Venetian Loggia, and the Neratzes Mosque (originally an Augustinian church, converted to a mosque under Ottoman rule, now a music conservatory — the minaret still stands). Rethymnon’s old town is a surprisingly authentic maze of narrow streets where Venetian doorways coexist with Turkish-era wooden balconies. Afternoon: Arkadi Monastery (23km from Rethymnon) — the site of the 1866 Holocaust where nearly 1,000 Cretans chose death over surrender. Return to Chania. Overnight in Chania.
Day 4: Elafonisi Pink Beach & Monastery
Full day excursion to Elafonisi — the pink sand beach and turquoise lagoon on Crete’s southwestern tip. Wade across the knee-deep sandbar to the small island. The shallow, warm water and pink-tinted sand make this feel like a Caribbean beach transplanted to the Mediterranean. Visit the Chrysoskalitissa Monastery (17th century) on the return journey. Evening: farewell dinner in Chania’s Venetian Harbor. Overnight in Chania.
Day 5: Departure
Morning: Lake Kournas, Crete’s only natural freshwater lake, for a final swim. Transfer to Chania Airport for departure.
