Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Niamey

Arrive and transfer to hotel. Afternoon exploration of Niamey’s Niger River waterfront. Evening briefing on the Gerewol — one of Africa’s most extraordinary cultural events, where Wodaabe men compete in a male beauty pageant to impress potential wives. Overnight in Niamey.

Day 2: Journey to the Sahel

Full day driving through the Sahel to the Gerewol gathering site (location varies yearly, typically near Agadez or Diffa). Cross vast landscapes where Tuareg camel herders and Wodaabe cattle herders navigate one of the world’s harshest environments. Overnight at festival camp.

Day 3: Gerewol Festival — The Yaake Dance

The Gerewol begins. Watch Wodaabe men spend hours applying elaborate makeup: yellow facial paint to lighten their skin, black kohl to accentuate their eyes (and make their teeth appear whiter), and intricate white lines to elongate their features. The Yaake dance begins at sunset — lines of young men dance in perfect synchronization for hours, rolling their eyes to show the whites and flashing their teeth in exaggerated smiles. Women watch from the sidelines, select their favorites, and tap the man of their choice. Overnight at festival camp.

Day 4: Gerewol — Final Competition & Camps

Morning: final round of the Yaake competition as the judges determine the most beautiful Wodaabe man. Afternoon: visit Wodaabe camps to learn about their nomadic lifestyle, cattle culture, and unique traditions. Photograph the elaborate hairstyles, traditional dress, and facial expressions. Evening: Wodaabe music and storytelling around the fire. Overnight at festival camp.

Day 5: Agadez Exploration

Drive to Agadez. Afternoon exploration of the UNESCO-listed old town. Visit the Grand Mosque (built 1515, 27m minaret — tallest mud-brick structure in the world), the Sultan’s Palace, and the vibrant camel market. Sunset from the mosque minaret. Overnight in Agadez.

Day 6: Return to Niamey

Fly or drive back to Niamey. Afternoon at leisure. Farewell dinner at a restaurant overlooking the Niger River. Overnight in Niamey.

Day 7: Depart Niger

Souvenir shopping at the artisan center. Transfer to airport.
