Itinerary Highlights
Day 1-2: Antananarivo — Gateway to Adventure
Arrive Tana. Day 2: city tour — Queen’s Palace, Analakely market, and the artisan district. Visit a Madagascar chocolate workshop — taste bean-to-bar chocolate made from Malagasy cocoa. Traditional silk weaving demonstration. Overnight in Tana.
Day 3-4: Andasibe — Into the Rainforest
Drive to Andasibe. Two days exploring Andasibe-Mantadia National Park — search for indri, diademed sifaka, and the nocturnal aye-aye at the nearby island reserve. Night walks reveal mouse lemurs, leaf-tailed geckos, and incredible chameleons — Madagascar has half of all chameleon species on Earth. Overnight at a rainforest lodge.
Day 5-6: Antsirabe & Highlands
Drive south through the highlands. Explore Antsirabe — pousse-pousse ride, artisan workshops, and volcanic lakes. Day 6: continue to Ranomafana National Park. Arrive in time for an evening walk to spot the park’s nocturnal wonders. Overnight near Ranomafana.
Day 7-8: Ranomafana & Isalo
Day 7: full-day exploration of Ranomafana — golden bamboo lemur, greater bamboo lemur, and 10 other lemur species. Day 8: drive to Isalo National Park through the southern landscape that transitions from forest to savannah. Arrive at Isalo — Madagascar’s answer to the American Southwest with its dramatic sandstone canyons. Overnight at Isalo.
Day 9: Isalo National Park — Canyon Adventure
Full day trekking in Isalo. Hike through deep canyons to natural swimming pools (Piscine Naturelle) hidden among the rocks. Spot ring-tailed lemurs, Verreaux’s sifaka, and the endemic Isalo window gecko. Visit the massif at sunset when the rocks glow red and gold. Overnight near Isalo.
Day 10-11: Ifaty — Baobabs & Beaches
Drive to the southwest coast. Visit the spiny forest around Ifaty — home to baobab trees of several species and the ancient Didiereaceae plants. Day 11: relax on Ifaty’s stunning beaches, protected by one of the world’s largest coral reef systems. Snorkeling among tropical fish. Overnight in Ifaty.
Day 12: Tulear & Return to Tana
Morning at leisure in Ifaty. Visit the Antsokay Arboretum — 900+ plant species, 90% endemic to Madagascar. Fly from Tulear back to Tana. Overnight in Tana.
Day 13: Tana — Royal Hill & Farewell
Visit Ambohimanga, the sacred Royal Hill and UNESCO World Heritage site — the spiritual center of the Merina kingdom. Afternoon at the artisan markets. Farewell dinner of Malagasy specialties. Overnight in Tana.
Day 14: Depart Madagascar
Transfer to airport.
