Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Port Moresby
Welcome to PNG! Airport transfer. Afternoon city tour: National Museum & Art Gallery, Parliament House (inspired by a Haus Tambaran spirit house), and the Port Moresby Nature Park with its collection of birds of paradise. Overnight in Port Moresby.
Day 2: Fly to Goroka — Highlands Welcome
Morning flight to Goroka, capital of the Eastern Highlands. Dramatic flight over the Owen Stanley Range. Afternoon visit to a local village to meet the Asaro Mudmen — warriors who cover themselves in grey clay and wear fearsome clay masks, a tradition born from hiding in the Asaro River from enemies. Cultural performance and traditional mumu (earth oven) dinner. Overnight in Goroka.
Day 3-4: Goroka Show — The Festival
Two full days at the Goroka Show, PNG’s largest cultural festival. Over 30,000 participants from 140+ tribal groups gather to display their traditional dances, songs, and body painting in an explosion of color, rhythm, and proud cultural identity. The costumes alone — elaborate headdresses of bird of paradise feathers, intricate face painting, shell jewelry — are breathtaking. Photographers’ paradise. Overnight in Goroka.
Day 5: Highlands Villages
Visit highland villages to experience daily life beyond the festival. Meet coffee farmers — PNG’s highland coffee is world-renowned. Hike through lush mountain scenery. Afternoon at the J.K. McCarthy Museum and the Raun Raun Theatre for traditional performances. Farewell dinner. Overnight in Goroka.
Day 6: Return to Port Moresby & Depart
Morning flight to Port Moresby. Afternoon at the Bomana War Cemetery, the final resting place of 3,779 Commonwealth soldiers from WWII. Transfer to airport.
