8-Day Experience Athens & Crete: Acropolis, Knossos & Spinalonga

Day 1: Arrive Athens — Welcome to the Cradle of Western Civilization

Arrive at Athens International Airport (ATH). Private transfer to the Sea Breeze Hotel, featuring a rooftop terrace with direct views of the Acropolis and the Saronic Gulf. Evening: orientation walk through the Plaka neighborhood — Athens’ oldest continuously inhabited district, a tangle of neoclassical houses, Byzantine churches, and taverna-lined stairs climbing the northern slopes of the Acropolis. Welcome dinner at a traditional taverna with live bouzouki music. Overnight Sea Breeze Hotel, Athens.

Day 2: Acropolis & Ancient Athens

Morning guided visit to the Acropolis — ascend the marble steps through the Propylaea (monumental gateway), stand before the Parthenon (447–432 BC), the greatest temple of classical Greece with its optical refinements (columns that lean inward imperceptibly and a floor that curves upward so the temple appears perfectly straight to the eye), and the Erechtheion with its Porch of the Caryatids — six marble maidens supporting the temple roof. Visit the Theater of Dionysus (the birthplace of Western drama, seating 17,000), and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus (still used for summer performances). Afternoon: New Acropolis Museum — a masterpiece of modern architecture built over excavated ruins visible through glass floors, housing the Parthenon frieze, the original Caryatids (five of six; the sixth is in the British Museum), and the collection of kore and kouros statues from the Archaic period. Evening: free to explore Plaka, Monastiraki Flea Market, or the Anafiotika quarter. Overnight Sea Breeze Hotel.

Day 3: Athens to Crete — Flight & Heraklion

Morning: free time in Athens — climb Lycabettus Hill for 360-degree city views, visit the National Archaeological Museum (the world’s finest collection of ancient Greek art, including the Antikythera Mechanism and the Mask of Agamemnon), or shop for sandals at the poet Sandal Workshop in Monastiraki (running since 1920). Afternoon: transfer to Athens Airport for the 50-minute flight to Heraklion, Crete. Arrive Heraklion, transfer to your hotel. Evening: stroll Heraklion’s Lions Square and old harbor, dinner at a seafood taverna. Overnight Heraklion.

Day 4: Knossos Palace & Archaeological Museum

Morning guided tour of Knossos Palace — explore the 4,000-year-old Minoan complex: the Grand Staircase, the Throne Room, Queen’s Megaron with its dolphin frescoes, and the Central Court. Your guide brings the Minoans to life through the myths of King Minos, the Minotaur, and Daedalus’s labyrinth. Afternoon: Heraklion Archaeological Museum — the Phaistos Disc, Snake Goddess figurines, the Harvester Vase, and the frescoes from Knossos. Evening free. Overnight Heraklion.

Day 5: Spinalonga Island & Elounda

Full day excursion along Crete’s northeast coast. Morning: drive through the dramatic coastal landscape to Elounda, a sophisticated harbor town on the Mirabello Bay. Board a kaiki for Spinalonga Island — explore the Venetian fortress built in 1579, walk the Ottoman-era streets, visit the leper colony hospital where 400 patients lived in isolation until 1957, and stand on the fortress walls looking across the bay to Crete. Afternoon: return to Elounda for seafood lunch and swimming at Elounda’s Blue Flag beach. Option to see the submerged ruins of the ancient city of Olous. Overnight Heraklion.

Day 6: Crete Vineyard Tour & Wine Tasting

Morning visit to Crete’s wine country — the island boasts over 4,000 years of winemaking history, one of the oldest continuous traditions in the world, with indigenous grape varieties found nowhere else. Visit a family-run winery in the Heraklion region to learn about the unique Cretan terroir (volcanic soils, sea breezes, and abundant sunshine) and traditional production methods — including the use of clay pithoi (amphorae) that dates back to Minoan times. Taste a selection of Cretan wines: crisp Vidiano (white), aromatic Vilana, and the powerful Kotsifali-Mandilari blend (red), accompanied by local cheeses and rusks. Afternoon: free time — perhaps visit a nearby olive oil farm, relax on Ammoudara Beach, or return to Heraklion’s markets for final souvenir shopping. Overnight Heraklion.

Day 7: Free Beach Day & Farewell

Free day to enjoy Crete at your leisure. Options: take a bus to Matala (1.5 hours) — swim at the famous hippie beach beneath the Neolithic cliffside caves where Joni Mitchell lived in the 1960s; visit the Palace of Phaistos (the second-largest Minoan palace, on a hill overlooking the Messara Plain); or simply relax at one of Heraklion’s nearby beaches — Ammoudara or Lygaria. Evening: farewell dinner with views and music at a taverna in Heraklion old town. Overnight Heraklion.

Day 8: Departure

Transfer to Heraklion Airport for departure.
