Day 1: Arrive Heraklion
Arrive at Heraklion Airport. Private transfer to Hotel Hersonissos Central (or Hotel Hersonissos Maris), your base for the entire tour in the lively coastal town of Hersonissos. Evening: free to explore Hersonissos’s waterfront — choose from dozens of tavernas serving fresh-caught seafood, or stroll the sandy beaches as the sun sets over the Cretan Sea. Day 2: Knossos Palace — The Minoan Labyrinth
Morning visit to Knossos Palace, the ceremonial center of Minoan civilization and Europe’s oldest city. Your guide navigates the sprawling complex: the Grand Staircase, Throne Room with its alabaster seat, the Queen’s Megaron with the famous dolphin fresco, and the Central Court where bull-leaping rituals — the Minoans’ most sacred sport — once took place. Learn how Sir Arthur Evans’s controversial reconstructions (early 1900s) both preserved and transformed our understanding of this 4,000-year-old culture. Afternoon: free time to return to Heraklion and visit the Archaeological Museum (entry included) to see the Phaistos Disc, the ‘Snake Goddess’ figurines, the bull’s head rhyton carved from steatite, and the remarkable frescoes from Knossos. Day 3: Land Rover Safari — Lassithi Plateau & Zeus Cave
Full-day Land Rover adventure into the Lassithi Plateau. Ascend winding roads through the Dikti Mountains, passing the historic stone windmills that once irrigated the plateau. Arrive at the Dikteon Cave (Psychro Cave) — according to Greek mythology, Rhea hid the infant Zeus here from his father Cronus; the cave’s soaring chambers of stalactites and stalagmites have been a sacred site since Minoan times, and excavations revealed bronze figurines, double axes, and offerings dating back 4,000 years. Continue to the village of Tzermiado for a BBQ lunch at a family taverna: chargrilled lamb chops, horiatiki (Greek salad with barrel-aged feta), tzatziki, and mountain greens, all washed down with local wine. Afternoon: visit an olive oil cooperative, learn how Crete’s famous extra-virgin olive oil is produced, and taste different varietals. Return via the scenic Selinari Gorge. Overnight Hersonissos.
Day 4: Spinalonga Island & Elounda
Morning drive along Crete’s stunning northeast coastline to Elounda, a sophisticated harbor town with views across the blue bay to Spinalonga. Board a kaiki for the 10-minute crossing. Spinalonga’s story is layer upon layer of Cretan history: a Venetian fortress built in 1579 to control the Mirabello Bay, an Ottoman settlement, and from 1903 to 1957, one of Europe’s last leper colonies. Walk the stone-paved main street, visit the church of St. Panteleimon, see the hospital where lepers were treated, and stand on the fortress walls looking back at Crete across the water — the same view that gave the island’s exiled inhabitants both torment and hope. Afternoon: return to Elounda for a swim and seafood lunch. Option to visit the sunken city of Olous (ancient Minoan ruins visible in knee-deep water). Evening: return to Hersonissos for a farewell dinner. Overnight Hersonissos.
Day 5: Departure
Transfer to Heraklion Airport for departure. Option to extend with a day trip to Chania or Rethymnon.
