4-Day Bonito Eco Adventure: Crystal Rivers, Snorkeling & Waterfalls

Day 1: Campo Grande to Bonito

Transfer from Campo Grande to Bonito (3-4 hours through the Mato Grosso do Sul countryside). Afternoon arrival in this charming eco-tourism town — the main street is lined with restaurants, dive shops, and tour agencies. Check into your pousada. Afternoon at leisure to explore, swim in the hotel pool, or visit the Bonito downtown area. Evening: dinner at a local restaurant — try pintado (a giant catfish from the Pantanal rivers) or the famous Pantanal alligator meat (ethically farmed, tastes like chicken crossed with fish). Overnight Bonito.

Day 2: Rio da Prata & Olho d’Água — The Crystal Rivers

Full day of world-class freshwater snorkeling. Morning: Rio da Prata (Silver River). After a briefing and wetsuit fitting (the water is refreshingly cool), you’ll enter the river and float 600 meters downstream. The visibility is staggering — 30-40 meters, crystal clear. Schools of dourado (golden dorado), pacu, piraputanga, and curimbatá swim around you in their hundreds. Aquatic plants sway in the current. No flippers needed — the gentle flow carries you. It’s like floating through a living aquarium. Riverside lunch. Afternoon: Olho d’Água River, a 1.7-kilometer float through equally pristine waters. Dozens of fish species, underwater springs bubbling up from the limestone, and the surreal sensation of drifting weightless through liquid crystal. Overnight Bonito.

Day 3: Sucuri River, Macaw Sinkhole & Blue Lake Cave

Morning: walk 500 meters through Atlantic Forest to the headwaters of the Sucuri River — one of the clearest springs on Earth. The water emerges from the limestone aquifer so pure you can see every grain of sand on the bottom. Float or snorkel this pristine waterway. Afternoon: Buraco das Araras — a 124-meter-deep, 500-meter-wide sandstone sinkhole that’s home to a breeding colony of red-and-green macaws. The birds wheel overhead, their raucous calls echoing off the crater walls. You might also see toucans, caracaras, and the occasional caiman in the pond at the bottom. Late afternoon: Gruta do Lago Azul (Blue Lake Cave), Bonito’s most famous sight — descend into a limestone cavern with a startlingly blue underground lake, 90 meters deep, fed by an aquifer. The water’s intense blue color, filtered sunlight, and prehistoric bone deposits create an otherworldly atmosphere. Farewell dinner in Bonito. Overnight Bonito.

Day 4: Final Morning & Return

Optional morning activity: Boca da Onça waterfall (the highest in Mato Grosso do Sul at 156m), or simply enjoy a lazy morning. Transfer back to Campo Grande for your onward journey.
